Something to think about. GM is in serious financial trouble. 8 billion in debt, billion not million and with the poor management in place it will only get worse, not to mention recent union shake up. The Cummins makes the Dodge Ram the best choise, in my opinion. My 98 12 valve gets the job done for me altho the body and other components could have been much better.

I see so many threads about the automatics and I have a question. If you look at the diesel pusher market namely Monaco and others they put Cummins engines in them with 6spd autos. If they can be made for them why not Dodge as well. The pushers usually run around 20k lbs and up and they seem to hold up just fine. Why is it so hard to put one in Dodge trucks.

I feel that the derated manual, in the GM's, is a reality in engineering. The entire drivetrain can't take it! Second, I wonder how many gears it will be limited to peak power rating? A dyno blip on a sheet of paper is, in my opinion, a weak selling point. A continuous rating is more important. Example-A MERCEDES BENZ medium duty truck rear end has a continuous input rating of 660 ft. /lbs. , and it has a 15K axle rating and possess a 12. 8" ring gear. Here's a request to all the domestic manufactures: BUILD THE ENTIRE VEHICLE TO LAST! Not just an engine or a transmission ect. I feel the only reason we are seeing these big #s are because of the future competition from the Japanese manufactures. They will build the entire product to last. I feel the way they(Japanese) have destroyed the car market, they will repeat history with their new trucks.

What a joke, V8 diesel are junk, the only V style diesel that are worth a **** are in Trains, Ships, power generation, and other large applications because they need a lot of power and the main reason is it size, all the do is combine 2 I-6 or I-8 and make one motor. The prinicple in smaller diesel engines like- cars, pickups, tractor trailers, equipment under 1000hp is the inline style and that is it ask Cummins, CAT, John Deere, etc. V style motors are NOT FOR PICKUPS, RIGS, CARS, when will Ford and GM WISE UP, they will never be the best plain and simple, OOOOO!!!!!! They got 35 more hp and and 50ft/lbs more torque than my 05 610, Oh!!! Wait there UGLY for one and with the few mods on my truck and the few coming, they will never see 600hp @ the rear wheels let alone 350 through that POS transmission. JUST MY THOUGHTS CUMMINS FANS AND OWNERS

I think part of the reason for this is smoothness. For example, Allison can create a bullet proof transmition as you pointed out but Chevy required further tweaking to make the shifts as smooth as possible... . smooth shifts equals more heat. Also one thing to point out these heavy duty trannies don't have 'park' (the rigs are parked in neutral with the much more affective parking brake provided by the air brakes (or lack of air in the brakes as the springs hold it. ), in that press release about the new 6sp it mentioned something about being able to select your gear or something to that affect..... I wonder if this will be similiar to the traditional Allison that has the push buttons on it. That would be kinda cool in a light duty truck.

No it basically allow you to select an inhibited range. When the range is selected, grade braking is disabled

What it doesn't seem to allow you to do is force it to remain in a higher gear like 5th or 6th.

My friend who is the head mechanic at my local dealership just attended two days of training which he hates as everybody does. They talked about a 6. 1 isc motor for the ram which outputs 500hp. I said no way he just smiled and said yes way. They are actually planning this far ahead. Will it ever happen? I have my doubts but we have came 80 horse in 3 years.

It would be nice, but would it pass the 2007 emissions laws?

Maybe true afterall ??? I hope so

My buddy with an '02 Dmax just put his in the shop. 70K miles on the truck. Exhaust soot contaminating the coolant. The dealer is working on the injection system. If that doesn't work I guess they'll pull the heads. At least it's still under warrantee.

I hope that Mercedes has there hand in it. if they do, I bet it will be a GREAT transmission

BTW - I hear Mark@TST was doing 3rd gear launches with his 06 G56-equipped truck, he said the G56 is holding up really good, Better than he though, FWIW

How bout they take 30 or 40 hp and give me another 10MPG!

My 98 had 190 hp or something like that and it pulled like a govt mule. I have enough HP/TQ (of course I'll take all they will give ;) ), what I WANT is better MPG.
