2006 engine damage - Dodge no warranty **Update pg 6**

Summary:

I was on my way to Gulfport, MS from Memphis, TN, stopping half way for fuel. Noticed oil all over my truck and leaking like crazy.

Update:

So after over a month of my truck sitting at a dealer 200 miles from my house, I finally hear back from the service manager today.

The Chrysler Reps came in, plugged up their computers, and they can tell "something" was plugged up to it at one point. Don't know what, and it's not there anymore, but that was enough for them to deny the warranty.

The manager was very nice and wanted to cover it, but Dodge won't let them.

I was runnin' Bullydog on 90hp performance setting, nothing ever higher. It was either that, a lower setting, or take it off totally and plug up the Quad 65hp box. I never went over 90hp. The oil test shows that there is more diesel in the oil than there is oil.

The manager is charging me only $80 to rip the engine apart and figure out what's wrong, and said he'll let me know by Tuesday an estimate.

So... now I got a 6 month old truck that I didn't push past the reasonable limits and I gotta pay for possibly a new engine rebuild.

Sucks. Be careful boys.

Jonathan,

Just curious... how many miles did you have on the truck? Not that it should have mattered, but I've got an '06 with the tst/ez stack, and am getting a little jittery after hearing so many stories of these new trucks dropping valve seats, injectors going bad, etc.

Did the truck give any indication while you were driving that something was wrong?

Sorry to hear about your problem Jonathan. This is about the thrid time I have been ready to get a mild box and one of these stories pops up. I guess I'll just keep mine stock. It's too big of a gamble for me.

Take care!

My truck has 22K miles on it. I have ran a box on it for about 15K of that.

I am worried because this is the only power mod I have done, which is considered to be mild since under 100hp.

The only indication I had anything was wrong is on the way down I was getting really bad gas mileage. Like 10-11mpg which is highly unusual. Other than that it was running fine, and then the oil pressure dropped once something blew.

I know ya gotta pay to play, but I was under the impression that the mighty Cummins could take a small tweak.

So looks like I'll be paying quite a bit to fix the thing.

As I understand it, the BullyDog is a timing/duration only on the tow & performance settings, and timing/duration/pressure on the Extreme & Crazy Larry settings.

I was running on Performance which is timing/duration only.

That should be a wake up call to all common rail owners... ... ... check the oil often enough to catch the fuel contaminated oil before anything lets go.

I don't want to get into a peeing match, but the downloaders are and presumably always will be able to be detected. It is too easy to tell when a reflash was made. It may take a special DC tool to read, but any electronics can be set up to monitor things like that.

I also do not believe that everyone is getting the full story about what the programs are actually changing. WIth add on electronics you can physically see what is being altered. With a flash tool you are totally trusting what someone on a phone is telling you.

That sucks and hopefully the damage is not severe.

Yes, I may be going back to my quad box alone... if anything.

BullyDog wrote me back and said in their experience it is probably a failed injector which leaked a large amount of diesel into the oil. If that's the case according to the dealer, I may replace with aftermarket injectors that are more reliable.

Also may go back to just the quad box. If I had just used that, they would not have known as qzilla said.

Anyway... dealer said they didn't know, but Chrysler reps had to plug in all their special tools they brought with them. So despite putting stock program back on, yes... things are changed that they can find.

My tech told me that they did not have a way to check and see if a box had ever been on there but I guess things have changed. .

Well "box" I still don't think they can, but "programmer" they definitely can. Take it from me. :(

I'am not going to get into a debate but any alteration can be detected, even boxes.

The only one that might be (and that's still a big might be) immune to being detected is the smarty programmer.

were you runnin the tripple dog?

Also, magnum moss?? Dont they have to PROVE what caused the damage to not warranty work? I know its a lot like our legal system and you have to prove yourself innocent, but I think its worth a shot to argue.

When you say "box" are you are referring to a device that takes the signals from the engine sensors and then alters them and delivers them to the ECM? With a device like this the engine is operating within the parameters within the ECM, when it is removed the only information logged in the ECM is it's own. How is that detectable?

Bob

Oil comsumption has never been an issue for me, but I still check it often for that very reason. Fuel dilution is also my main reason for sampling.
