2006 owners... tried backing up with door open?

Thanks, TDR Staff

Carfax

That would be "Mr. Diksh it" to you....

Dont get me wrong here... but I think the issue at hand is this truck not being in park when you throw the handle up into park.

Lets forget, for just a second, the use of the e-brake, or any check or procedure.

Its obvious to me, and must be to DC as well that there is a genuine problem here. Frankly, I do blame DC in this instance.

Car manufacturers including DC, have been putting auto column shifters on for quite some time, and there was no need for this alarm/bells/whistle thing. Not until this (frequent) miscue surfaced could be put off on operator error. What a handy excuse that is. Maybe it will work on some, but I am not buying it.

Honestly, Did the 2nd gens exhibit this problem? 1st gen? (Fords?)What changed? (What if the person is deaf?) Put a properly functioning column shifter on it that works and be done with it--its been done for a long time up until now.

And for the record, I am in total agreement with the hot coffee, bogus lawsuit, stuff. Alright- Fire away

I wonder if that alarm in the 06's is what the recall on the 03-05 automatic Ram diesels are gonna be when is comes out sometime in the near future. If it is I will be sure NOT to get it done.

Preach on Jarbini!! Amen!

And as for the previous gens, good point... they didn't have the annoying beeping and look... those people are still alive.

I'll tell ya what's gonna happen...

Someone is gonna try backing up in an '06 sooner or later and the horn is gonna start going crazy, the person is going to be so startled and freaked out that they're going to roll underneath the vehicle and be paralyzed. Then maybe Dodge will reconsider the fact that their alarm is harmful more than helpful.

Yup it is new for 06, you can thank all those people who could not push the shifter into the park position for that one. Chrysler responded by putting an annoying feature like that in for you; I do believe that it can be disabled with the starscan though not too sure will have to look...

Nope. At this time it is there period :(

When this feature is triggered the horn will sound, the high beams and turn signal lamps

will flash. This will continue until one of the following conditions is met:

· engine is turned off

· transmission is in “Park”

· driver’s seat belt is buckled

· brakes applied.

*Or until you have finished any extra backing for trailer connects.

Geeze, I just thought about those times when you need to come back just a little more. . maybe twice or so, hop in and grab reverse- sometimes I will even look down at the ground with door open to gage a 3"-4" roll. Guess the 06 drivers will need to buckle up to do that or power brake.

THIS FEATURE IS STANDARD EQUIPMENT AND CANNOT BE DISABLED.
Wanna bet on that? It won't be too long before the first 06 driver bombs that bad idea. Imagine the embarrassment hooking up at night in an RV Park :-laf

Hmmmmmmmm sounds like a good excuse to disconnect the stock horn and get ya a set of Grovers! :-laf

I picture some new truck owner that didn't know about this feature until AFTER the air horns are installed. ROTFLMAO :-laf

Did some checking...

And this feature IS NOT disablable in the ECM... So unless your willing to completly get rid of the factory horn and using the steering wheel horn controls your out of luck. And I am sure one of us will figure out a way just a matter of time.

Well when mine finally gets here I think I'm going wire in a switch in the horns. Then when I know that I'm going to do something stupid like back-up WITH my door OPEN(OMG) I'll flip the switch and disable the horns. Oh wait, I'll be to stupid to remember to do it, crap.

I've got it get a small horn that will sound so that you can remember to turn the switch off for the other horns :-laf

just wire up a relay so when the door is open and the seatbelt is unbuckled then it kills the horn feed... . would not be that difficult.

New just out. .

Back up horn fooler for 06 drivers. This is a complete kit requiring no other parts and is plug an play. Kit consists of:

  • One Scotchloc

Clamp it onto the drivers seat belt buckle harness and your good to go.

Disclaimer- will disable the seat belt dinger also so you will need to remember to buckle up for regular driving.

the easiest fix for backing up with the door open is to scotchlock the 2 wires together on the seatbelt switch then you don't have the little red light on for the seatbelt either :) i figure if i fall out of the truck it should be my own fault, not dc for scaring me with the horn .

Amen Brothers, Amen!

This is off the horn topic but on the backwards lawsuit infested society topic:

Did you guys see on Hannity and Colmes a couple of weeks ago the story about the rancher who's property borders Mexico? One rancher got sued by the MEXICAN government for "illegal imprisonment" because he held a group of illegals at gunpoint until the border patrol arrived. HE LOST HIS RANCH in the suit! IT WAS AWARDED TO THE ILLEGAL ALIENS! AN AMERICAN CITIZEN LOST HIS PROPERTY TO ILLEGAL ALIENS, WHO INVADED OUR COUNTRY ILLEGALLY! Chew on that one.

VOTE and VOTE CONSERVATIVE!!!!

It's called liberals... they don't want to take responsibility for themselves and always want to put the blame on someone else.

Can you imagine if 50 years ago they had someone try to sue a company because they spilt hot coffee on themselves? They would throw it out of the court and tell the person they're a dumb*ss.

Can you imagine if 50 years ago they had a burglar suing a home owner for having an unsafe house, dogs that bit him, or a homeowner for shooting him? The court would not only throw it out, but they'd throw the burglar in jail.

Today... the company is to blame for the coffee being too hot, and the homeowner has to pay the burglar millions because they didn't make their home safe enough and they shouldn't have used an evil gun to protect themselves.

So now because of them, we get stupid seat belt warnings and your own car honking at you for trying to backup.

When you shoot a burglar, the trick is to make sure that survival is impossible. Always use enough force -- a big enough gun. I mean, you bought the Cummins with that attitude (get enough power to do the job). Whenever you pull the trigger toward a human being, you want to make sure that they never get up. Unfortunately, the courts won't let the police protect themselves that way.

Instead of closing, editing, or telling everybody to get back to the topic, I'll send this to the "Other" forum.

jonathon, don't even get me started on the burglar alarm crap. how many of you guy are aware of the "castle doctrine" that's only in a couple states and no longer requires you to retreat in your own home if someone breaks in before using lethal force against the intruder?????????? it is absolutely absurd you'd have to retreat at all to protect your home. i have a couple buddies who are cops tell me if i ever had to defend my home like that the only way i'd be safe from any prosecution would be to allow myself to be injured first and that if i did have to shoot a burglar to make sure he's not shot in the back and is most certainly dead to avoid civil prosecution & end up paying his hospital bills. what spineless, cowardly, criminal-loving, liberal genious thought that one up. i'm sick of having everything i'm into regulated, scrutinzed, sued almost out of business, demonized and every other tactic the intolerant, politically correct crowd use to fulfill their perverted, naive agendas while criminals are coddled and made out to be victims. it shouldn't be anyone's business what i drive, what fuel i burn, what i eat, how big my house is, what i smoke, what i shoot, what i watch or read etc. GET OUT OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't smoke cigarettes & yeah they're nasty but they're still legal so the other crowd rather than go the honorable route & try to have them made illegal their pompous, arrogant, self righteous, do-gooder mentalities try to sue them out of existence, print warnings that are like "no *****? really?" and go as far as trying to outlaw smoking them in your own home or car. this is just pure, unamerican, unethical, dishonest, socialist, unacceptable crap and i've had enough. and mcrossley, if there's more posts in this thread we'll compare family and i'll post all about my useless, incompetent 25yo brother in law who can't cook himself a meal or buy his own cigarettes but he's had no problems fathering 2 illegitimate kids by 2 different mothers and owes lots of back $$$$$$$$$. thanks guys for letting me vent. we should keep this going because we probably all have stuff we'd like to share & get off our chests, stuff the "wine & cheese" guys just don't get but then again all their tools fit neatly in a kitchen drawer.

Yep, the good ole "castle doctrine" was one of the wonderful bills brought to us by none other than the ultra-liberal TED KENNEDY!! Heard about that one on the news/talk channel (Neal Boortz show) a while back. It is crap like this that is eaxctly why I am going to start voting for and supporting the Libertarians.
