2008 6.7 rebuild questions.

Hey all,

New to TDR and have a few questions hoping someone can point me in the right direction. My 2008 6.7 broke, part of the piston became part of the cylinder.. I initially thought it was just a head gasket but that was only one of the problems. I pulled the head and had it machined and got a set of ARP studs and the cummins upper gasket set from genos.

I'm looking for the best place to buy the rebuild kit and if there are any must do upgrades or changes I need to do while I'm in the engine.

It's my work truck so I'm not trying to make crazy power, it's also already been deleted. Truck has 180,000 on it and besides the engine, the transmission and transfer case and rear axle are new (piece of 20 inch pipe fell off a truck and it got run over and broke everything) it has a new southbend clutch as well.

I'm just looking for some insight as I got very little on the other forums. Thanks in advance

I would only use genuine Cummins parts,the trick will be finding a machine shop that will work with you

I'm going to put the engine back together myself and I've found a reputable machine shop that will hone (or bore the block if needed) I'm just not very internet savvy and was hoping someone could point me at a website that has all the parts I need.

Hi BWT, Welcome to the forums. You can get kits on ebay and so forth, I would check with my local Cummins shop. A lot of their parts are the same price or cheaper then you can get from someone selling knock off Chinese parts. Also make sure to have your injectors tested, someone told me that after i lost #6 piston, and 5 of mine were bad, I ended up finding a complete used engine with 62k on it only about 80 miles from the house. I called the local cummins warehouse they have OEM pistons complete with rings and wrist pin clips for 160 (the dodge house wanted 365). I may just go aftermarket and get the rebuild kit that has Mahle pistons and OEM gasket kits

The QSB pistons are about $180 with rings and pretty close to the Mahle in composition. Working with your local Cummins dealer might cost a few $$ more but in the long run be cheaper. Internet sales being what they are, you might not get what you though you paid for.
