I love the LAST line in the 2500/3500 image posted above:

3500 Max Tow Avail on 3. 73 &3. 42

I was under the impression a 3. 42 rear end for towing purposes would make the Earth stop turning? ;)

YES I AM JOKING. Please, let's not start a war. I just find it kinda funny that Dodge obviously feels it's good choice for the "Max Tow" 3500 after all the grief I went thru. LOL :)

I don't know where this image is your talking about, but the Max Tow Pkg is not out yet, it starts with YM 2012 trucks, only 3500 with DRW, not 2500, or 3500 SRW, you may be confused with the new 800 HO engine, that in itself does not make it a Max Tow, the 4:10 rear end is part of the Max Tow Pkg, if it doesn't have 4:10, it doesn't have the package, very simple, I hope this helps, I have done my homework, I am buying one very soon.

The image posted by Austin Diesel in Post #7 on the first page of this thread. The second image down is for 2500/3500 trucks. The last line says 3500 Max Tow with 3. 73 and 3. 42.

You can read it just as plain as day as I can. I'm not making it up.

Edit: Here it is again, look at the last line.

OK, I found it, I never thought you made it up, but yes that is what it says, but it says 3. 73 & 3. 42 ratios available on Max Tow (Late), mine won't be a late one, I don't have a clue what there thinking, that may or may not ever take place, 3. 42 gears will not move 30,000 pounds of Rig very well in certain locations, they may have a transmission change coming late also, just not wanting to talk about it.

There's been rumors of an 8 speed for quite some time now. Would be a very welcome change. Fact is, it doesn't matter what the rear end ratio is if the transmission is geared accordingly. Overall final drive is what really matters.

A 3. 42 could work really well with an 8 spd if the first 6 gears were pretty low compared to today's trannys. Do something like lock out 7th and 8th when you're in tow mode, 6 gears is more than plenty if they are spaced right. Then when you're running empty have 7th and 8th for a tall final drive that will yield some pretty nice fuel mileage.

I agree completely, the other possibility it is a Marketing Gimmick to sell more trucks, they will have to lower the CGVW rating down some if that is the plan, but a true Max Tow would have to have 4. 10 gears, or ever 4. 30 would be nice for those who really haul the big stuff.

Only responding so I can receive email updates to this thread on my phone. I want to know when the 2012 specs are officially out. I do not get to check my computer every day.

Dealer order sheets are out, asked yesterday no major changes ,factory trying to burn off old stock inventorys of parts only changes are still what sheet lists as per yesterday, dealer sales flyer is accurate unless some recent changes have occured overnight.

3. 42's on a max tow will not have the same ratings as a 4. 10, just simply have ratings that meet the new standardized tow specs.

I guess to answer my own question, I went to my local dealer and asked for a "build quote" on a 2012 3500 Big Horn DRW. Some of the prices were up 3-4% some stayed the same. The Max Tow pkg was $506:rolleyes:

Yes, some prices are up, but some options are now standard as well. 800# is standard, the 730n stereo standard (at least on laramie), etc. Overall it's a little more, but not much for the same package. I just place my order.
