The writer didn't name a source for his claimed "insider advance information. "

I doubt it is valid but, how knows?
 
Unsourced information is rarely reliable and seldom credible. The writer who claimed to know did not identify the source of the information. I would be surprised if Cummins or Dodge announce big engine changes months in advance to a small group of dealer mechanics which I can only assume the writer is. They don't announce it to dealer principals or consumers.
 
Is DEF such a bad plan, compared to more EGR, reduced performance and reduced fuel economy? I'm not a tree-hugger, and would like to be better informed. We have about 10 DEF Ford C&C at work, with various opinions, the biggest is the varying costs of the DEF.
 
I don't think DEF is a bad thing when compared to a damned DPF. I think all the Class 8 big trucks are using it now.
 
The new trucks will still have both. BILLUA is on the correct side of the argument in waiting to buy a new truck. What would be another improvement would be a seventh injector in the exhaust like the Duramax uses for regeneration.



The cost of DEF is incidental, it's less expensive than fuel, and may very well reduce the frequency of the required $100 oil changes.

A 7th injector in the exhaust should certainly help with fuel dilution of the lubricating oil. DEF does seem to help MPG.

If that is all true?, it sounds like normal changes, this time next year we will hear more stuff to change, and so goes the auto business.
 
I drive a 2011 F350 Chassis Cab at work with the 6. 7 diesel. The DEF tank needs to be filled about every 7k miles and is really a non issue. Even with DEF the trucks still have the DPF. I'm seeing a regen about every 200 to 250 miles.

I believe that is correct. In the parts side of things there are a pair of NOx sensors used in the exhaust, one before and one after the SCR unit that resides behind the DPF on the big stuff.



It has cleaned up the exhaust enough to allow Ryder, Penske and other large fleets to begin speccing underslung exhaust for the day cab tractors. Saves money and weight.



It is working OK on the big stuff, price of DEF has stabilized here.



One thing that saves fuel using DEF is the engines as a rule do not need many forced regens, the 08-09 ECM's call for forced regens quite frequently and that sucks some fuel.

Governed speed at a standstill with the fan just roaring for 10-15 minutes while performing the regen takes quite a bit of #2 fuel on a 15 litre engine.



You do see a an occasional steering wheel holder dump DEF directly into the fuel tank (not good) but that is becoming very rare.



Embrace it, it is not a bad thing. The technology is getting there.

Yes, that is correct. It's called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

You actually forgot something? I can't believe it!

No, I didn't say I forgot, I didn't know. I mistakenly thought adding the DEF could replace the DPF. You explained.

I forget lots of things. Sometimes I can't remember where my glasses are until I put my hand to my face and find them or refocus my eyes and see the frames.

Haha... I forgot to put my contacts in a few years ago and went all day. At the end of the day my eyes were so tired and it made me think I was exhausted.

Got home and went to take them out... they were still in the case.

He mentions later in the thread he works for a dealer, though in what capacity he doesn't specify.
 
If you remember, a few issues back, TDR magazine hinted that 2013 will bring DEF. At the National Finals Rodeo 2011 (Las Veags) the Dodge reps there said that DEF will likely be issued for 2013 on 2500/3500 trucks.



I'm in favor.
