Hello everyone,

I am receiving my `14 2500 6.7L w/ the 6 speed G56 in a few days :-laf and I am trying to figure out what upgrades/mods I should have done to maximize my MPG and any good known performance shops around the Baltimore and DC area. From researching, it looks like getting a tuner would be a quick easy tool, but I'm thinking there are a few more things that I can do to go along with a tuner. Also, are there any upgrades/mods that won't void my factory warranty??

Thanks in advance for any tips and advise for a first time Cummins owner.

You won't have much luck with a tuner. The EPA is going after the tuner guys big time. Any tuner or anything that changes the engine performance will kill the warranty and RAM is looking for mods. Personally the 6.7 has plenty of power and fuel economy can be fairly good if your right foot is real lite on the pedal. Just did a round trip from Carson City to Vegas and back. Cruise at 72 got 20.8 mpg hand calc. Headwind one way and tailwind the other. These trucks are heavy barns to move through the air so speed kills economy. At 65 same distance got 22.5. Newer trucks with DEF should do a little better.

Any mods can affect the warrantee if the modification is determined by the dealer shop to have "caused" the malfunction.
I have even heard of Cummins requiring more information from dealers lately about warranty reoairs.
They are cracking down on tuners? Your truck will get better mileage than the older ones.

I have a 2013. It will be exaxtly 1 year old on thursday. I am waiting even to put on a bypass oil filter.

I have the g56 as well and want to put the FAST cooling fins on the transmission. (Search for fast in geno's garage).
But, I'm waiting at least another couple of years.

I have determined it has enough power. I don't need a tuner. And I don't drive it enough to need better gas mileage.

I recommend the heater block cord if you didn't order it.

I am happy with the fuel mileage. Gets the same mileage effecrively as a v6 SUV I had in the 90's

You wont find any delete capable tuners but there are a few "boxes" out there, edge has one, BD has a TPS booster that will help with acceleration Smarty is spose to have one soon

From my past experience with an 07.5 with the 6.7L, it didn't even gain me 1 mpg, only the loss of the warrantee. Not worth it in my opinion and it usually never pays for itself. The Aisin version has more power than the 07.5 did even with the chip on performance. Unfortunately the G56 version doesn't benefit from that upgrade. It is a pleasure to be able to put your foot into it hard if I like and not worry about breaking anything because I haven't modified the truck beyond what it's designed for and it is engineered to handle itself and if it doesn't, it's not out of my pocket to deal with it. The stress that I had being my own warrantee station on the last truck will never happen again. Just my two bits.
Welcome to the forum by the way.

You probably won't be able to delete these new trucks. The old trucks ran much better after delete because their emissions were designed to run too much egr (not efficient) extra egr reduced combustion temps & Nox. And they weren't running efficiently.

Only reason to tune was after delete (IMHO) because the engine wasn't coded to run without its emmissions.

13 & 14's emmmissions systems do not disturb the efficiency/power of the engine.

RVTRKN, just curious if you deleted & tuned yours. Saw your g56 cooling system. I don't know what all those letters in your signature mean.
Impressive cooling system. I'm wondering if they upgraded the g56 bearings and parts to handle the higher torque in the 14's & 15's.

I'm running mine hard while under warrantee to see what it will handle.

Bone stock.

Mine was reflashed in 09 that causes the regen to surge after 2K RPM (see other posts for info) and HP/TQ increases during regen and took out my clutch while towing at 23K GCVW climbing a grade. I'm not aware of any G56 upgrade and the HP/TQ is lower than the auto equipped truck. If your referring to my signature with "SMF DD3250" it's the single mass flywheel conversion with a dual disk clutch conversion. It causes the Trans to run noisy, and is why Dodge uses the DMF. When the Trans was inspected it was found to have browned bearings from running hot, keep in mind my truck was stock and until the SMF conversion. It is the reason I installed the cooler, with stock HP/TQ I have seen as high as 250* Trans temps, but not any more. :)

I would also recommend waiting for a before you do and mods. You WILL put you warrantee in jeopardy if you add a programmer, and I doubt that you will see much of an improvement anyway on a newer truck. The 13 and 14s are pretty good from the factory, much better then the older 6.7s.

It's your truck and your money, but as someone who has been towing 5th wheels with Ram 3500 duallies since 1996, I'd make 2 suggestions:

1. Unless you have an overriding reason to buy the G56, I'd highly recommend going for a truck with either the 68RFE or the Aisin 6 speed automatic, and that comes from someone whose last Ram was a 2002 3500 with the Cummins HO and NV5600 6 speed manual (an ETH/DEE truck). Both automatics have proven to be very reliable, GCWR and tow ratings are higher with the automatics, and engine torque and horsepower ratings are higher with the automatics as the engines don't have to be detuned due to the limitations of the G56 driveline.

2. As complex as these trucks are, I would highly recommend holding off on the mods until your warranty expires. The last thing you need is to have a problem without warranty coverage, as these trucks don't lend themselves to shadetree mechanic troubleshooting and repairs like an old 5.9L 12 valve truck. And, yes, that's coming from someone whose 2002 Ram was bombed (modified).

As I said, it's your money and your choice, but there's my 2 cents' worth for your consideration.

think I heard the TS Stryker module does not leave a foot print in the ECM. BUT, It only alters fueling based on load so it probably wont net much of an increase running unloaded.

I never buy extended warranties, HOWEVER who would want to own one of these new super complex trucks without a warranty? SNOKING

In some ways the computer controlled trucks are easier as the trucks know when there is a problem. I had a problem with my 2011 that once I trusted the trouble codes I found the problem.
I agree completely with Rusty's post. My 97 and 05 where both manual and modified, I wouldn't even consist an auto trans. The new 6 speed autos at both good trans if used how designed. Turn up the power and hot rod them and they wont last. I have the 68 rfe in my 2011 and very happy. I really like the remote start feature of the truck and its only available with the auto.
The hp and torque from the factory now is really about as high as you can get without reliability problems. I really believe the head gasket problems that some say are from the turbo back pressure is really from the fact that the engine output is at the end of the design limits of the factory head gasket.

Yep, I paid $3,400.00 to have my truck covered bumper to bumper for 160,000 kms and 5 years. When I'm about three months from that expiring, I will be ordering a new one. My wife's Journey has had the touch screen replaced in it once already and that would have been $3 G plus. Too much going on in these trucks for me to want to not have a warranty. The DEF module had to be replaced already and that was $2G plus on the paperwork.
Just not worth the risk to me anymore after putting $50 G plus into the 07.5 that I had, which I deleted at 10,000 km's and became my own warranty station.

Same here. This is the first extended warranty I've ever bought. I've never used it, but the peace of mind is worth it to me.

Can you say "I am my own warranty station" ????????

I have a wrong geared truck that has performed extremely well. Just pulled the North Cascades pass at nearly 29K with 3:42's both ways. There are 6 and 7% long sections and the slowest speed was 45. My opinion is these newer trucks are very capable right out of the box!

That is the only reason l bought an extended warrenty ,it

is because they are so complex that it would not take much to get your money back and then some for what you spent on the warrenty. Example l spent 1800 on an engine warrenty for a15 liter Cummins. Egr tubes cracked about a $3000 repair job . My cost 250 ded. The smaller diesels aren't much cheaper to fix these days.
