2015 3500 ram

My Wife and I are considering buying a 2015 Ram 3500 Laramie, there are three trucks we are looking at, all 3 have the Asian 6 speed automatic, but one has the 3:42 axle ratio, one has the 3:73 axles and the third has 4:10, the dealer says all the Asian trannies all have the same gear ratio's internally, so only the differential gear ratio's are different. We are planning on using it to pull a 32 foot 9000 pound fifth wheel camp trailer.
My question is, which rear end gear ratio would be best for pulling?

3:73 is a good all around pulling gear, and good for mpgs running empty too

Why a dually for such a light trailer? Do you plan on a heavier trailer down the road? If so, get 3.73 or 4.10 gears. 3.42 in a dually might be a resale issue later on. SNOKING

I don't plan on a heavier trailer but ive pulled 28 foot or longer trailers with single rear wheel trucks and dually, the dully is more stable, not as much rear end sway is all

Yeah, even unloaded I'd never go back after having a dually. I've had one for 13 years now and will always have one. Heck, I'd own one even if I daily commuted in the city and had to deal with parking it.

My feelings exactly, I did use mine for quite a few years as a commuter vehicle.
I would opt for the 3:73 gears as an all around gear, or 4:10 if a lot of your miles are loaded. I am very happy with the 4:10's I have but my trailer is twice as much weight, would not recommend the 3:42's at all.

I bought a 2001 dually new, and its been a good truck, its all original and the odometer just turned over 100'000 miles, duallys are the way to go when it comes to towing

I would go with the 3:42's because the Aisin has the lower starting gears. If you want to tow heavy later you still can just use 5th instead of 6th and be at the same RPM's as the 4:10's in 6th.

I towed 28K combined for thousands of miles the only real issue was the 68RFE's taller starting gears.

FWIW, I believe my Aisin with 4.10 gears spins just a tad slower at 70mph than my 2001 with the NV4500 and 3.54 gears.

Driving Cummins12V98 with 4.10's was much better than my 2001.5 auto with 4.10's. Aisin .63 vs the 47RE .69 it cruised along nicely in the top notch. Snoking

I think your dealer is incorrect in this statement. The Aisin transmission has the same gear ratio as the Aisin transmission that was used in the C&C models truck. This was the AS68RC and has been superseded by the AS69RC transmission. These are different than the 68RFE if I remember correctly at least in the first gear of the transmission. Please read in the PERFECT COLLECTION book on the home page in the LH column pages 159 and up on the Ram automatic transmissions.

TDR Issue 81, p. 89 (see digital magazines on the homepage menu) has all the transmission ratios.
68RFE: 3.23, 1.84, 1.41, 1.00, 0.82, 0.63
AS69: 3.75, 2.00, 1.34, 1.00, 0.77, 0.63

Therefore, the two transmissions have the same ratios only in fourth and sixth gears.

Also, there are no components common to the two automatics. The 68RFE weighs about 265 lb. and the Aisin weighs about 425 lb.

4.10's.... The double OD makes cruising with 4.10's comfortable and 1st is only so low.

IMHO 3.42's don't belong in a DRW.. but then again for how I use my trucks I would want 4.10's on a SRW.

I am not sure what the RPM's were. I just know I was shocked we were going that fast! I will have to do it again and report back.

My Son has the 3500 SRW Crew Longed with he Aisin and 3:42's. He has a 14K dump trailer he had more than loaded with pea gravel. His combined was easily 24K, The truck took off effortlessly with that load. I stand by my statement that I would buy the Dually with the Aisin and 3:42's unless you are towing HEAVY as I do! Remember with the Aisin and 3:42's the load moves much easier than with the 68RFE. Also the 3:42's in 5th gear is about the same as the 4:10's in 6th.

M finding the mega cab very stable as well... Maybe the long wheel base?...
