I finally got my 215 injectors installed. I now have enough torque to chew up and spit out my transmission:eek:

There isn't much difference with normal driving but with a trailer behind me on a steep grade I can slip what I think was overdrive. I'll have to be careful since this transmission has to last me awhile.

I do have more pre-boost smoke and she lets out a cloud of black at 60 mph when I stomp on it from cruising, I may have to back the AFC off a little now.

I can just imagine what it's like for you guys who upgrade to 370's. I wanted to make better use of my plate without going overboard. Plus it was about half the cost of new 370's without the need for delivery valves.

Piers said the 215's would give me about 25 hp and 75 ft/lb of torque with my setup, I think he was pretty accurate:D

That's probably your TC lockup clutch slipping. Once it starts to slip it only gets worse. Mine started slipping like yours while towing and went downhill from there. If you let it go too far it will ruin your whole transmission. I bet your TC front cover is blue from the heat. I'm not trying to scare you but the time to do some transmission mods is before the TC clutch fills the transmission with little pieces of clutch material and gets way more expensive to fix. Take it from someone that's been there...

Similar trucks

Steve, our trucks are nearly identical except that I installed a DTT VB a while ago & you've got a beefed-up TC (mine's still stock). Luckily, my TC clutch doesn't slip yet, but I don't drive crazy too much either! Hoping to get 200K out of the transmission and then treat my ride to a rebuild/upgrade. The way technology is advancing, I think that I'll be getting a pretty good transmission late in 2002 or early in 2003!!

Amazing isn't it? You just can't believe the power these things can make until you feel it through the seat of your pants. :D

Thanks for the replys guys.

Ron, I don't know if it was the TCC or overdrive, I just know I gained 200 rpm for a couple of seconds without any change in speed. There was no shudder. It was actually my own fault, I shouldn't even have been in overdrive at the speed I was going. They need to raise the speed limits, it would make it easier to tow in overdrive:D I might try raising my line pressure a little, but using my head while towing will probably do more good.

Fortunate, You are right on the technology. It just keeps getting better and better, and the competition should keep the price down.

Larry, I can just imagine what your rig feels like:D I don't plan on reaching some of the crazy numbers that others are reaching.

I will still have kids in school for 9 years if they don't go to college, my budget will keep my hp manageable. :(

Steve, if it suddenly gained about 200 RPM it's also possible your TC clutch unlocked momentarily. This is usually caused by a dirty TPS. It's another symptom often reported on this forum. When the TC unlocks, it's natural to back off on the throttle because you think you are slipping. That moves the TPS off of the dirty spot and it locks up again.

I thought an unlock condition would raise me over 200 rpm. I like my converter but it's not as good as some of the newer ones on the market.

Next time I pull a load on a grade I will reach down and do a manual unlock to see what the rpms do.

I have to have a trailer behind me to do any real tests, without the weight it's no challenge for the Cummins.

GSK in your future.

Steve;

Installing a Governor Spring Kit will let you tow in the 2500 rpm range with direct (3rd) and locked.

Are you going to the Dyno Meet at Goerend next weekend?

I'm hoping to be there

rev it up and diesel on

Steve, Dieselnerd's diagnosis is right on. Many times with a dirty TPS the rpms won't increase all the way to the next lower gear before jumping back down, it can happen very fast. Pushing OD off will shift you to 3rd locked, more than 200 rpm. You're seeing more like a shift from 4th locked to 4th unlocked. You can do this by stomping on the pedal while locked in 4th.

Bill, I was talking about reaching down to my mystery switch and unlocking. I know the OD off button would really increase rpms.

John, I won't be able to make it up to Goerend's. I took this weekend off so I could go to a demo derby, it got rained out today so will have it tomorrow.

I know the 3k GSK would allow better towing speeds with OD off. I'm tossing the 3k or 4k around in my head. I want to do something and not change my mind later. If I go with the 4k I will already have the valve springs done for an exhaust brake later.

I have to slow my brain down, my wallet can't keep up with it:{
