I now have 20,000 miles on the tk. The average is 19. 9. Most of the time I run empty and average between 20 and 21. 5 mpg. Towing my jeep usualy drops to 14. 5 to 16mpg.

Scott,

I am an engineering student at BYU, and am writing a technical paper comparing the Ford and Dodge diesel's. I need information regarding fuel economy, and am hoping you all will help me out. if you all would kindly, include empty and loaded fuel economy figures, and include year and model, gear ratio and transmission type of your truck somewhere in the post I would be very greatful.

Scott,

00 2500 4x4, 3. 54, 6spd, 265/75/16's, w'Banks Power Pack and flush topper: averaging 21. 5 mpg in 70/30 hwy/city driving while empty at 7200#, with hwy speeds averaging 75. Pure highway at 75 averages 24 mpg. Towing 9500# trailer nets results between 14 and 18 mpg depending on terrain.

Empty

local=16mpg

Highway=18

Traileroaded (19,800 lbs. ) Max, get

Highway=14. 00 mpg

Box trailer empty = 14. 5

I never seen 20 mpg ever. Wind Frontage is a bigger factor than the heavy load, I even did some second gear at Max load in the Mountains with no problems 45-50 mph.

JBlock,

Thought I was the only one with disappointing numbers.

Lately it has gotten worse. Down to under 14 around town, 15 on highway. Truck is still stock, but upgrades are looking better all the time.

Best I have seen empty is going to Eastern Arizona camping trips. 20. 6 MPG.

Loaded with single car hauler and load about 5500 lbs 14-15

With head wind 13-14

Loaded with 24 ft gooseneck and load totaling 10,000 + 13-15

With a headwind 11-13

Avg. Speed 65

This is with DD2's, Comp on Level #1 and Piers Super Turbo with 14cm housing

BigBadDodge:

#1 - I suggest you tell your friend that in looking at the above posts, those in Canada may be reporting Imperial gallons, so he needs to be sure to correct for that when he can.

#2 - With all this data coming in, I'd sure like to see you post his final conclusions, if not his whole report. I've been really surprized at how close some of the numbers are to each other - past data seems to indicate more spread, but this thread seems to consistently show many with 4X4 getting ~20 IF they drive ~65 with a high percentage of "highway" miles.

Fuel mileage

I think fuel mileage depends alot on the person who is controlling the pencil. It's not unusual to hear someone reporting on this site of towing a 20K flatbed loaded with an in-loader in the mountains going 80 miles an hour, getting 18 M. P. G. Then you will here other disappointed lads that can only get 11-13 in the city, and 16-18 running solo at 65 MPH on the highway. My own experience, the more RPM, the less mile per gallon. When I read these stories, I'm one of the disappointed lads.

I think a lot depends on the mileage that you have on your truck. It seems the more miles the better the fuel mileage. I have 44,000 on my truck now and get 21 - 22 mpg unloaded running between 65 -70 mph.

However, when I first got my truck I was getting 17 mpg tops unloaded running 65 - 70. I took it out one night at 10,000 miles and ran 90 - 95 mph for 5 miles. My fuel mileage increased to over 20 mpg on the next tank. The fuel mileage increased another couple of mpg over the next 20,000 miles. The truck now runs better than the day I picked it up. I love this truck!
