Competition Dyno #'s, what's your opinion?

Competition Goodbye!

I have read a few threads that stated that the NP205 is not as strong as the NP241 LD T-Case. Can anyone out there can give me some insite on which case is better? I have both sitting on my shop floor and both are in good shape?

Thanks

Malcolm

.

I would take them both and trade them for a 241 dhd, since you are taking time to change them you might as put inthe big one.

I'd say that the NP205 is stronger due to it's cast iron vs. alum case. The NP205 is a spur gear reduction vs. the 241's planetary. . it's hard to say. . the NP205 is noisier than the planetary gear set. . but I'd say it's probably stronger. Parts are probably cheaper too.

Thanks for all the input on the t-cases. The link is good reading also, except for the guy who had to invest in a new case.

I was hoping for someone who has run the 205 behind a high HP Cummins and see how it has held up. I feel that the case Iron beast would be stronger than 241. Some say it's not as strong.

I heard that the NP271 in the 3rd gen is the case to have.

I think the biggest NP205s were put behind the 1st gen cummins. I have herd from several good pullers that the 241 is stronger than the 205.

no offense

just a thought ... the 205s output is pass side ... the 241dhd and 271s have it on the drivers side ... hopefully won't offend anyone by stating the obvious

Hey 2broke2smoke, no problem. I have some many different parts in my truck I have a hard time figuring it out.

I have a Cummins engine, Dodge trans, Ford Dana 60 High pinion axle all stuffed into a 94 Chevy. Not to mention the all small stuff.

I have a Ford NP205 that drops to the drivers side that I can use.

Thanks

One advantage I can see in the 205 is it's two shift rails. You could fab up a twin stick shifter for 2wd low, also being able to shift from 4wd to 2wd while in low range is nice. I had a Willys with the Dana 18 transfer case, it was pretty sweet having all the gear options.

On the other hand, the low range in the 205 isn't as low as the 241, if that matters.

I have not had any problems yet with my 205. Although I have seen problems with both units that were in pulling trucks. I would say that with as many of the 241s that have been holding up to both for drag racing and truck pulling, that the 241 would be strong enough for all but the most extreme powered engines.

There are two versions of 205, one rated similar to the LD 241 and one near the 241HD. While the 205 case is iron, the bearing mount plates are aluminum. Also the 205 has 1. 96 to 1 low range vs. 2. 72 for the 241s.

Which versions are you talking about? There are many different spline counts. . The GM 32 spline is considered to be the strongest. It also has 32 spline output shafts. The dodge NP205 has a larger shaft though.

I got the info from New Process some time ago. The chart did not say how to find the heaviest version. You might check the web site or call them.

PRO-FAB

PRO-FAB is a company in northern WI that makes all kinds of gear sets as well as gearboxes for all types of pulling. Larry does a lot of work with all the big name pullers (NTPA/ATPA),and makes a kit for the NP205. His kit has larger shafts, straight cut/heavier gears, and a center support bearing for the main shaft that utilizes an aluminum support bracket that replaces the pto cover. This is a "competition only"kit. Just another option.

I'm not affiliated with PRO-FAB just a satisfied customer.

Hey Bert (NTPA,ATPA) What about ISP & Fantasy ;) . We love the Pro Fab parts & they also make hard parts for the manual transmission. They are tougher than hell but pricey.

Just for the record my NP205 has 32 spline output shafts. I will be getting the Dodge input gear/shaft to mate to my NVG5600.

Will this be a better set up than using the 241, even though the 241 has a better low range (I don't mind the lack of low range gearing).

Thanks for all the help.
