I have searched on here and read a few writeups. I'm not 100% sure on the process, though I think I could figure it out. I've never adjusted valves before.

Time for me to learn, or should I have it done?

Cummins Northwest wants $125 to do it, does that sound reasonable?

Truck has just over 149,000 miles on it, and it's never been done to my knowledge.

City Diesel in AL is charging $75. 00 out the door. I thought that was a steal! This is a shop that stands behind its quotes. My RASP install was quoted at 5 hour install. It took them 11 hours to put it in plus they threw in the missing parts. The shop only charged me for the 5 hours of labor and nothing for the parts they used that were not included in the line kit. Great bunch of guys and they have definitly earned my business on my up coming upgrade.

Or spend $85 and get the factory service manual from Geno's. It has the step by step instructions for the valves (pictures even). Then you have a manual left over for other maintenance.

I'd never adjusted valves before I did the ones on my truck. Now I've done it several times (due to retorquing fire rings) and can knock them out in about 1/2 an hour.

I adjusted mine myself after finding the specs on here. It wasen't that hard. Just make sure you triple check yourself if you've got doubts. This was at about 180k. Maybe made it a little quieter, not any smoother. They weren't that far out.

Nate, I've got a '99 FSM and I could scan the pertinent pages for you or just let you borrow it and I've also got a barring tool you can use. PM me.

Nate,

I'm almost at 100,000 on my 2000. I have the manual. We could get together with JR2 and have a valve adjustment party. He's done it before.

Andre

I got the pages from Speedo, and I just got around to working on it this weekend.

Curious... the FSM says "The 24 valve overhead system is a low maintenance design. Routine adjustments are no longer necessary. "

Why does the owner's manual say to do it then?

The manual says to remove the fuel pump cover and look for the TDC mark. That makes sense on 12v.

I took the crank breather "can" off and didn't see any mark, just a nut that's there.

You'll probably need a mirror and a flashlight, but you'll see a line (groove) in the gear that the nut is holding in place. It'll be stamped in the gear, right next to one of the two holes that are drilled in the gear for a puller.

The 12 valves needed the adjustment more frequently, but the 24v still needs it done once in a while (100,000 or 150,000 miles, I think).

Ok. Where would the TDC mark be located at? I'm going to take a look tomorrow. Cold, dark, windy and raining right now. Also it's 1AM.
