Going to buy some Nitto's this week and need some info. None of the stores near me have them in stock and I will need to order them. Since I can't compare the tires side by side, I would like to hear any and all opinions on the subject so I can order the right tires the first time.

I did some checking using the calculators at Tyres International and it seems the 285's will change the rear ratio from 3. 54 to 3. 44 and the 295's will change it to 3. 38. This doesn't seem to be that big of difference. I also would like the tires to llok right on my truck so it doesn't look like I tried to stuff to big of a tire on a stock truck.

Thanks,

Charlie

go with 305-70-16 same profile height as 285 however, wider. won't affect gear ratio as much and speedo calibration.

I have an alternative view. I have owned both 285- and 295/75/16's and I can't tell a bit of difference between them in how they handle and how they affect the power of the truck.

I have driven on 305/70 Goodyear Wrangler ATS's and they're a little more "squishy" than my 295/75 BFG AT's.

Hope this helps.

Your sig does not say auto or stick, but on my 6 speed I went from the stock 265/75/16 Michelins to 305/70/16 ProComp ATs

The 6 speed with the 3. 55 rear gear has no problem starting in second gear with the new 33" diameter tires as it was a little low to begin with running the 265s imo.

I do think an auto transmission might be a little sluggish with 33s and 3. 55s, but that's just a guess...

Would the 295 75 R16s fit on a stock truck without any suspension modifications? How about 315 75 R16s? What affect would that have on the 4. 10 with auto?

There might be a little rubbing on the lower control arms at full lock. The 315's will change your 4. 10 to about 3. 78 or so. Your speedometer will read 65 when your really going 70. 5 if my calculator is right.

I run 295/75/16 BFG AT's on an 8" wide rim with 1/2" less backspacing than stock and they don't rub the control arms at all. They *just* touch the fender liners when turning and compressing the suspension (like turning into a driveway that has a bit of a rise to it). I have no suspension modifications on my truck (a 2500 QC 4x4 SB). See pics with the 295/75's here:

They look good (to me), handle well (to me), haven't hurt power, and put less miles on the truck per trip. They did take away about . 5 mpg though, maybe due to increased rolling resistance over the stock Michelins.

I love 'em. Everyone I've talked to that put 305/70 or 315/75's on their truck said it really changed the truck's handling. I'm sure some folks are more sensitive to such things... I know I am. Others may not be, so they don't notice a difference.

You pays your money and you takes your chances...

HTH.

305/70 Nitto's are cool...

I went to the local discount toy store and asked them to stand up a 285/75 and the 305/70. The height was identical and I know the 285 would have an edge on mpg and do better in the snow, but I liked the wider look. Other thoughts... . the 305 is load range e, is a couple pounds heavier, and costs 27 bucks more each. I do get a slight rub at full lock, but nuthin like the 315/75 Yokohama's I had before. Lots quieter too.

Oo. Oo. Oo.

The only differences I noticed when I went with the 315/75s were 1) better handling, 2) a little rubbing on lower control arm just before full lock, 3) a little rubbing on rear portion of wheel well at full stuff. I didn't notice any reduction in performance.

My kids noticed the truck was a little higher before they noticed the tires.

Charlie, keep us posted on what you go with. The 305 70s should look good, I think Diesel Freak recently put these on his truck (except he went with Yokahama/Les Schwab) and they look great. Beefy without such tall sidewalls.

When you get them on give us some feeback on handling and sidewall strength. Blampright put 18" Terra Grapplers on his ram and said the sidewall strength was great, but they won't be as tall with the 18" rims http://www.briansuniverse.com/dodge.asp

He went with huge 325/60/18s!

Going to town today to order the 305/75/16's. Hopefully they will be in before I head back to work. Have to be gone 21 days this time , but it means I'll be home for Christmas this year. I will keep everyone posted on my experiences with the Nittos on my truck.

Just put the Goodyear MT/R 315's on Tuesday. Mounted on Weld Stone Crushers 16x10's. The Superlift Tru Speed device works very well to correct speedometer error. I was showing 45 mph and doing 68 mph on the GPS.

I'm having fun now:cool:

I run 265s part of the time and 33s part of the time and I see know difference in power.

I went to 255/85/16"s this time, it really hurt my fuel milage. My fuel milage has dropped down to 16 miles per gallon, I was getting 18-19 mpg with 265/75/16's which were 31 1/2" tall tires, the 255/85's are 33" tires. With the 265/75's at 70 mph the engine was turning 2000 RPM's, with the 255/85's I am running 74 mph at 2000rpm's. I am geared 3:54, I think the 33' tires would work better with a 4:10 gear.
