1st Gen vs. everything else ...

When is a 1st Gen no longer a 1st Gen?

Do y'all know if it's possible to fit a second generation intercooler into one of our first gens? Cause, I have found several good deals on a second gen intercoolers. If it is possible, do you know what would be involved in the installation?

I gotta jump in here.........

The swap isnt just a simple case of take out the 1st gen cooler and replace with a 2nd gen cooler. DC wouldnt make ANYTHING that simple. You will need at the very least, different boots that will adapt from the ~2. 5" 1st Gen tubing to the ~3. 5" tube in the 2nd Gen IC. The second gen intercooler is quite a bit bigger, and hence more efficient; thus my desire for one, since I have to cut and fabricate anyway... ...

I have the elbow, tubing, boots, and intake from 3 different 2nd Gen trucks (ok, 3 trucks to make one set). All I need now is a intercooler and a weekend. I'm not real sure of gains to be had from upgrading your intercooled 1st Gen, but if you are like me, paying for a temporary slip of mind, and get a nonIC truck, then it may be worth it.

Turbo elbow- 2" ID turbo outlet to 3" ID into the IC tube.

Tube to intercooler (45* angle boot)- 3"ID on turbo end to 4" on IC end.

Then you have the bigger intake of the 2nd Gen 12V; of course, this isnt a necessity, but it would help to have the parts match up and flow along nicely. Dotn want to go from the turbo outlet (2") to the 3. 5" IC tubing, and back down to the 2. 5" 1st Gen tubing. Do it as intended, and bottleneck it at the intake itself.

I'll have to look and measure and figger up how it will bolt on once I get the IC. Looks like there is plenty of room between the grille and radiator, though.

Lastly, where are you getting these great deals, and how great are they? I have a junkyard looking and calling around for me this week, as I HOPE (though not especially planning) to move out west this month. Got a job, just need a place to crash.

Paul Herouix (ck spelling) has done this installation... . on a 90 I think.

You can probably do an archive search and find what he said about it. He answered a lot of my questions a while back so a pm might be worth the effort.

I have one out of a 97... . it was free but it needs repair as it was from an "oops" accident. I'm just not sure it's worth the effort?? My EGTs are not an issue at the moment and I don't tow or haul much. Perhaps... ... . it's on the "list".

JLeonard,

If you didn't notice, I have a '90 W250 therefore it is non-intercooled. So, I'm looking for a big potential gain with the upgrade. From what you say, it sounds like it would well worth the time to go ahead and get a 2nd gen cooler. My friend has one out of a '96 (i believe) that he says he'll sell me for $150 and it has no leaks. That's cheaper than any of the 1st gen. coolers I've seen on Ebay. Let me know if you get yours installed how it goes.
