You don't have to pull the cover.

Jack your front axle up leaving the right tire on the ground, mark the tire then turn the tire 2 revelations counting the drive shaft turns. If it turns just over 4 times it is a 4. 10, if it turns 3 and 3/4 it is a 3. 73.

On the rear if it is a posi jack up the hole axle if the tires turn in the same directions you would turn the tire only once, counting the shaft the same way.

It is usaly more accurate on the front being it is a open dif and no chance of the posi slipping a little.

Different Aisin Gearing?

Jacking the truck and counting driveshaft/tire turns is great, but there is enough diference between 3. 73 and 4. 10 mph at 2,000 rpm to tell. Just a point though, my 4500 turns about 2,100 RPM at 70 MPH w/ 4. 44s. tells me ther may be different Aisin gearing for different applications. Do they mix it up between ring/pinion options?

PS... mine has latest patch... starting to get 13. 4 mpg runing around city. highway. Curious about you 3500 C&C guys.

The difference between a 3. 73 and a 4. 10 should be around 200rpm.

Wiredawg, I havent heard of any other gearing for the 6. 7 aisin (AS68RC)

Morbius, using a gear ratio calculator with the numbers you gave 1850 @ 70 it comes out to a 4. 10

I like using Gear Ratio Calculator I would attach it if I new how.

Although not a 3500, my 4500 with 4. 44s is basically a daily driver about 6 miles each way to work. Getting about 13. 4 mpg. Unless I cruise in it on the weekend, that's about it. Just had the dealer change the oil after 7,500 miles. Don't normally have dealer Change oil, but part of Chrysler military appreciate, got free lube/oil change for 3 years. I guess the point is the idle and short trips don't seem to effect sooting of the oil, or adverse regens.

Should I start a new thread? This thread appeared to ahve died down so thought it is interesting an Aisin equiped 3500 with 4. 10s is turning about the same RPMs I am with my Aisin equiped 4500 with 4. 44s. Looks like differnt gearing in the trannies? Intersting to compare (othet than total load/hauling/towing capacity.

Did you feel the lights flicker? Are my 225/70-19. 5s larger than what comes on a 3500 C&C? That could be the answer how both turn about the same RPMs at 70 MPH.

Anyone else curious about MPG and Perf. I can already tell you mine goverend at 76 MPH due to speed rating of the tires.

Wiredawg

The difference between my OEM Michleins and my Ricksons with 225/70/19. 5 is a solid 3 mph... ... ... ... so I am sure that would be the difference between a 3500 and a 4500.

When I wear out the 225s, I want to go up to 245s and pick up another 3 mph.

The gear ratio chart I have seen and copied into another thread was specifically for a 3500 C&C. I've never seen a brochure for the 4500/5500 trucks.

I doubt the 4500/5500 Aisin is different in any way from the one used in the 3500s. The 19. 5 wheels/tires, which are slightly taller than 17s, most likely combine with the slightly lower 4. 44 gears in a 4500 to provide about the same highway cruise rpm.

Harvey,

I guess 8 months living in the RV and all the fun the goes into a total house renovation/major addition has just about tapped my thinking ability. Thats it.

Then I reckon the only other real performance areas are bigger brakes and 19. 5s. Sorry to hijack the thread, but does the 3500 C&C offer the longer wheel base too (188" I think) and what is GCVWR on them now? I would look it up, but easier to ask the owner of one. :D

Just another comment... mine doesn't have HD front springs, so hanging approx 180 lbs in front of the wheels with the grill guard and the heavy ***** tow body make it ride pretty good. The 19. 5s let you know what kind of road you are driving on.

Since I'm on a roll here, I might as well whine about the Phoenix SS covers... I can't get either a tire pres guage nor an air chuck of any kind on either ouside or inside rear tires. The openings are too small. I'm gonna take a Dremel to it There it is.

Cheers, Wiredawg AKA Ron

Ron,

Your 4500 has several advantages over the 3500. Bigger brakes, stiffer tires, GVWR of 16,500 lbs. and GCWR of 26,000. My '08 3500 has a GVWR of 12,500 and GCWR of 23,000 lbs. I believe the '10 3500 will have a 13,500 GVWR and a GCWR of 26,000.

My truck is loaded to GVWR with my HH in tow and over GCWR at around 24,500 lbs.

Only the 4500/5500 trucks offer the longer wheelbase. The 3500 offers either a regular cab with cab to axle length of 84" or quad cab with 60" ca.

I've hauled a few loads of gravel using a hydraulic dump trailer with gross weights just over 26,000 lbs. and the truck handles it well but it is exceeding Dodge's rated weights. My "little" 3500 is at it's rated capacity or beyond with a 14,000 lb. fifth wheel but has a softer ride for use as a daily driver and a top speed of 105 mph. I don't need 105 mph but it is nice to be able to accelerate up to 85 or 90 mph when needed on occasion.

Harvy,

On 5 Jun, it will be one year since I dove off the cliff buying this truck. I thorougly love it. The truck weighs 11,200 lbs w/ all the weight I've added. I am over GCVWR at 27,300 lbs, but not worried. Still haven't plumbed the aux tank, not installed the CB, the gauges, nor the aux lights. Too many projects.

I do have a little nit-noid complaint; I need to install a plastic/rubber (old mudflap) to close the gap in the front bumper. We live on a cleachey (sp) road and it always dumps it on the top of either side of the bumper. I am contemplating buying premium seating for the split seat in the back and extra storage under the unusable middle seat in the middle. I need to contact the TDR member who built finished wood/lined ice chests where the center seat was. I have it in the '02 3500 and it is great to carry water, sodas and samaches.

The 19. 5s are not showing any signs of wear, but probably shouldn't with just 8K miles. I am pleased I chose longer wheel base for the extra room with the fuel tank/toolboxes. It is actually easier to back the 5er than the '02 3500 was. Something Ive done is install about 12ea 5K lb cargo rings from Tractor Supply. Best idea I had for securing combos of cargo.

Another project I'm contemplating is adding two more tool boxes, one each side, in the back quarter panels. Would be nice for carrying lubricants/addititves.

Look fwd to sharing more info.

Ron
