Believe it or not, I never have known if my 96 Ram 3rd brake light at top of cab worked....
I know, crazy question, but I'm curious...

I removed the light assembly from the cab (1st time ever!) in order to paint the roof, and I found that the brake light bulbs were missing, but the "dome light" exterior lamps in same housing were present.

Then, while at the salvage yard, I decided to grab that 3rd brake light lens/housing from a a truck as a spare for the future.

I found the same thing, brake light lamps were missing (from factory I fairly certain.)

What gives?
Anyone know about this?
I have yet to actually check the circuit because the truck is powered down right now (no battery).

Is there some issue why these trucks did not come with those lamps installed?

???

I took mine out too, with a Camper on Top it's really annoying that glare inside the Cabin during a night drive.
Just as an idea why these bulbs could be missing.

smart idea!
i did not take mine out, but maybe when i bought my topper, they did,
although the topper did not have the 3rd brake light in it. i always wanted to add one as i always felt the ram oem brake lights were not up to snuff.

They were in my '95 until I removed them when I installed a topper, as Ozy said.

On a side note, the Leer topper I put on it had an LED brake light in it that I tied in to the LH brake light on the truck. I noticed one night that it wasn't working, nor was my LH brake light. I found the wiring from the LED in the topper all the way to where it was tied in to the LH light had been hot enough to burn all the insulation off the hot wire and the ground wire. I removed the LED light and the back of it was melted away where something in the light had shorted out.

My '98 came with a functioning center brake light (in Canada). Later my topper had a center brake light that connected to the cab light. I think there's a pigtail under the box just for a brake light.

I never had an issue with my camper and the brake light but I don't do much night driving with the camper.
