I dont even know how to post this so I'll just do it and see what I get back.

Has anyone ever heard of a 3rd gen truck running away and refusing to shut off.

I posted this question because my truck did this tonight. I installed a b-1 turbo from Kurt , cranked it up and let it idle until warm. Truck ran smooth and seemed to be fine until I ran the rpms up to 1500. It just tookoff after that and refused to shut off. I was pretty shocked(just sat there with the keys in my hand and did nothing for a second) then tried to choke off air flow to the turbo. I dont know how long it ran (maybe 30 seconds) but it didnt stop at the redline.

How did you finally shut it down. How did you quickly get to choke off the air to the turbo ? Now I wish the Engine had a air shut off door on the intake.

WM-300, Didn't get it shut down. I think it came apart somewhere inside and died. I wont know anything until I get it torn down but it ain't good.

Excuse my ignorance, but would the truck have shut down if you put it in fifth or sixth gear and let out the clutch??? Would it have stalled out, or powdered the clutch??

Had a box on the truck for about 30,000 miles but it was turned off(made sure before cranked the truck) . I put the B-1 turbo on the truck because I broke the shaft on my HX-40 and other than changing the oil while waiting on the turbo thats all I did to it.

Typically this is caused by some sort of injector pump problem. I had this happen years ago when I used to drive an international dt6000 school bus. The mechanic had to use a large piece of wood to choke down the air box to stop the engine. When the bus was repaired, it had a completely new injector pump.

The injectors are fired electronically so the CP3 should not be at fault. It may be an electronic error or it may have been burning fuel from another source. Any possibility of the engine running on oil from the turbo?

Exactly what i was thinking, the lube oil coupling might have had an internal leak. Diesels will run on the oil untill theres no more or it blows, seen this on I-95. Rig belching mostly blue smoke, driver standing 20 feet away watching... I mean high boost type belch not jus alil swirling out... hope you get this resolved

Had a 280z towed in once that had a ECM failure and loaded engine. Crankcase FULL of gas. Long and short new ecm,new oil and filter and started motor it tried to do a runaway. Dumped clutch and killed motor. Pulled off air box tube, cranked engine and it did it again. Pulled coil wire. It ran at a POOR rough Idle without the ecm and fuel line hooked up for a good 30 minutres and then died. Restarted with coil hooked up etc and it smoothed out and ran ok. That was a trip!

runaway

We had a Series 50 Detroit runaway here in the shop once. Lost a turbo and filled the CAC with oil, local Detroit shop sent a mechanic over to relplace the turbo under warranty and he didn't bother to check the CAC for oil. Things were ok after he fired up the engine until it started pulling oil up from the CAC and then things got exciting. I wasn't here when it happened but I was told that it sounded like it must have hit about 5 grand. They rebuilt the engine for us.

We may be on to something with residuel oil. I did have oil in the cooler from the turbo failure. I thought it had cleaned up after running for a while. Maybe once it warmed up and I pushed some more air throught it it caught some more and jusr snowballed. :--)

Yes the Governor has no effect in a runaway situation since the ECM is not in control of the engine. Runaways can be and are often caused by burning oil from the turbo sucked through the intake.

Vaughn, I think you are right about the oil. I've worked on diesels my whole life you would think I would know better. We will get it torn down over the weekend and see what survived.

Look on the bright side if it needs a new motor maybe I'll buy a 325/600. :p
