in troubleshooting the 4wd light i found all the bulbs to be good by putting them in the "ABS" position and turning the key on and letting the lights do their 10 second check, i also tried the other lights in the 4wd position. i pulled the light out and put the truck in 4wd and turned the truck on and found that there is 12 volts in the connector hole but no ground, which i was going in blind just wiggling the multimeter around until i found a voltage due to the position of the light cluster under the left side of the steering wheel and going in from the rear. do the lights come from the PCM or a Sensor? also do they supply ground instead of power since i found power in the connector?

P.S. if you need to change these light all you have to do is drop the kick panel under the steering wheel and look up from under the steering wheel, dont try to remove the guage cluster from the dash like i did. i used needle nose pliers to untwist them becuase i could'nt get them out with my fingers.

Update, digging deeply into the factory service manual, sometimes it is hard to find what i am looking for, there is a 4wd light indicator switch in the front axel. it is on the rear of the passenger side of the axel. the swith faces toward the passenger tire. to test the light pull the connector off and short the connector, i put a small pair of needle nose pliers across the leads, then turn the key to the on position and check if 4wd light turns on. my light worked so i pulled the switch out and check with the multimeter for a short when i pushed in the the button and i had nothing. looks like it will cost $7 at parts store.
