Make sure both transmission dowels are in place. The snout of the converter, the hole in the center of the flex plate, and the transmission dowels all fit closely and you should be able to close the gap between the transmission and adapter by hand. If you have to use bolts to close the gap, something is not right. the torque converter bolts should line up. I have not had trouble starting them with everything aligned. I can only imagine the rounded bolts were to help them get lined up with the flexplate. I have never done the install but if they would cut that corner I bet its a PITA.
My neck is starting to hurt just thinking about it. lol
