Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Camshaft change question

Has anyone ever thought to change the front axle vac motor engagement to a cable? My 4 wheel drive was never fast enough when I needed it to engage. If a cable could be used to engage the axle befor shifting to 4 wheel, the transfer would be imediate.

I remember the old warn locking hubs. This would be simular to having the axle locked in. I never cared for this vacuum shift system. What do you think?

Just FWIW,

My front axle was the last to get synthetic lube. After change over the 4wd engagement seems much smoother and considerably quicker. Perhaps others have experienced the same.

I have been running syn lube but what I don't like about the vacuum system is the small delay. I was stuck in a ditch once. In order for the axle to engage you have to be rolling forward or back. I could not so it would not go into 4x4. If the axle was locked, it would have shifted right in at a stand still. This is something I remember from an old C101 jeep I had. If the hubs were locked, 4 wheel engagement was never a problem. I can't wait to receive the cable mod and do away with the Dodge Vac junk.

grtescpa,

did you recieve the cable mod for the front axle engagement? If so how do you like it and was it an easy install.

Doug

You could a vaccuum switch in so you can lock or unlock the front axle whenever you want. I've kept mine locked in questionable conditions so 4wd engagement is quick and sure. I also keep it unlocked for backing a trailer etc. to have a 2wd low range. The cable would allow the same thing. My switch was about $20 from a place that does plows, dumps, etc. It's a switch for a lift gate I think.

I love it! It works just like my old Jeep. The mod took about 3 hours. I had some trouble routing the cable and removing the old vac motor. The one feature thats really nice is you can go into 4x4 low and then unlock the front axle and have a 2x4 low low gear on dry surfaces to sharp turn and pull a heavy load from a standstill.

If you have any pictures could you post them on things like where the cable is and how it was routed?

Thanks
