I want to make the exhaust quiet again.

Yes, it sounds GREAT the way it is now with just a resonator inline, but want to go as quiet as possible, but still keep low back pressure. Am considering a 2 muffler setup. Considering the restriction 2 mufflers would add to the system, Im pondering the thought of going to a Rip Rook stainless 5 inch exhaust system, but want it to look as close to stock as possible (of course the size is going to make that kinda difficult), but I want the exit point to appear as close to stock as practical.

The question is, if you go to a 5 inch system, will you get a drone using 2 mufflers? Can you even fit 2 mufflers under a short bed (with quad cab).

Or, is there that much loss of flow using dual muffs on a 4 inch system?

Drone or high back pressure are not optional. .

Any suggestions & experienced advice would be appreciated - Thanks.

just use straight through mufflers... My truck had an MBRP quiet muffler and a resonator on it when I got it. the truck was darn near silent. no performance difference. stick with 4"

this is true, but I promise you I can set up a 5" system that will be very comfortable. and I ALWAYS install tons of sound deadener in ALL of my vehicles :)

Put another turbo in the way to better chop up that exhaust noise...

Back when my exhaust droned (4 inch), installing a second high flow muffler was just the ticket.

Yeah, another turbo inline would sure be nice. . :)

But so far its looking like the consensus is 4 inch will be sufficient with 2 straight through muffs (possibly).

Will probably just ask Rip what he thinks since they will be working with what they have on hand. If he can make a quiet 5 inch that doesnt drone, Ill probably go that way (knowing that is about the best flow possible), but as Bob points out, it sounds like 5 inch may be tough to keep quiet and Im guessing it will probably resonate at some rpm no matter how many mufflers you have or how close to the exit point you put them.

Then theres the spare tire clearance to think about. I know 4 inch is going to just barely touch a 285 bfg tire. 5 inches will be tight.

So, probably will be 4, but will wait and see what is really do-able.

I know there is some disagreement that a little back pressure causes a quicker spoolup anyways, but if you CAN get the flow, might as well go for it. Would like to allow as much heat as possible out of the exhaust valves for more longevity.

Thanks for the input.

How about the Jardine 4" system? They are a "local" company and I have heard great things. I too am looking for as quiet as possible. My engine makes enough noise for me!

My dad has got a bully dog 5" exhaust system on his truck, but its an '03, the quiet one. He did have it straight piped and I thought it sounded awesome, but he wasnt much on it, so he had the flow through muffler put on and it really made it quiet, the only time you can really even hear it is when jamming through the gears, even then, not that bad, if you like it quiet. I like the noise of my 4" straight pipe on my truck.

Follow up: Wasn't able to get away to Oregon this week (plant christmas shutdown but too much to do still) but did speak with Rip and he suggested a 4 inch with 2 straight through mufflers. Really want his shop to do the work (out of loyalty to great suppliers) but having a tough time finding the time to get up there.

So, for g&g's thought I'd give Banks a call since they are almost local here in so. cal. Their price for a 4 inch 409 ss exhaust installed (they wouldn't add the second muffler). . over 800. 00!! Installed. Ha!! One thing they did say is if you go to 5" you definitely get a slower spoolup due to less backpressure. I haven't been there seen that, so have to take people's word for it.

I'm startin' to like that straight pipe more and more. Actually, I'll prolly see if Rip will ship a 409 ss system with 2 muffs and start charging up those sawzall batteries. :-laf

I have a Rip 4" System with a Donaldson 40" truck muffler that Rip installed and it works very well for me. No drone, just a nice Semi sounding rig with a pleasing turbo sound. Very nice sounding when crusing down the freeway and starting into a hill:).

That "sounds" good. . I'm jealous. It may be a little louder than what i'm looking for, but nice setup. I'm just partial to Dr. Rook when it comes to exhaust systems for our rigs. Seems like that has been one of his "fortes" for years now and I like how well he will answer your questions first.

No, I tried to make a trip up there this week, but couldn't break away. I'm kinda disappointed about it, but maybe I'll see what he can ship this way.

Basically want stainless, as close to stock look as possible, lowest restriction as possible, but quiet or quieter than stock (there's the catch).

Then one of the next projects will be noise blanketing under the hood.

Is your Donaldson 40" a "straight through" type?

(probably should start doing the research on mufflers)

I'm 65 now and for some reason my ears don't appreciate the exhaust drone noises anymore :D

I'm still running the stock exhaust system. But since all I do is drive around town, it don't make much difference right now.

Later, when I retire and start pulling the TT will probably want to install a better exhaust system, but keep it quiet.

The Donaldson is a straight through unrestricted 4" muffler that is 41" long. When Rip put on my system, it was what he recommended along with a resinator tip.

If you come up or decide to come up and want to hear my truck before you install or have him install a system, let me know and I will drop by his shop so you can hear how mine sounds and give you an idea of yea or nea for your purposes. ;)
