Whos running a gauge and what fluid temps do you see with outside temps.

I know on my 30 mile commutes if its colder than say 40 the gauge just comes off its 100 start temp. While 400 miles into a 800 mile trip with outside temps in the high 50's low 60's it almost hit 150. Are these normal / average?

The resaon I ask is they have never really gone over 125 even on 100 degree days if stuck in traffic I have seen it get near the 150 mark but never had it reach 140 while driving regardless of the temp. Then again this is my first long trip with the gauge

Low speed or stuck in traffic will not heat it up. Running in overdrive will heat it the most, pulling a trailer aggravates this.

Mid 80's, 15k pound trailer on flat ground mine would approach 210 cruising on overdrive. Shift down to 4th and cruise at 60 trans temps dropped to 175.

What you're seeing sounds normal.

I see the same thing as Scott. 5th gear, especially while pullling, makes heat. I have had three catostraphic failures while pulling trailers. The temp gauge never gave me a clue they were coming. One of these days I'll toss it and get a fuel pressure gauge.

Here's what I've seen on my '96
110-140 after 30-40 miles at lower speeds empty
150 long highway trips
170-180 in hot weather (100+) driving 70-75
170-210 towing avg. size load in mild weather
210-235F towing in warm/hot weather or grades (I hit 235F in Montana using 4th gear)

After getting it good and warm it took forever to cool down, trans cooler would've come in handy.

You can see the difference the fast coolers make when you come to an accident and the traffic is just sitting. My temp gauge has climbed 25 degrees once the airflow stops around the coolers
