A guy I work with bought a new 04 truck with a 05 5-speed auto. He knows the the trans is an 05 because of filter size.

Last week it wouldn't shift into 5th. He drained 1/2 qt. from it and now it will go into 5th. Is it that simple or is this an indication of something coming?

Thanks

As far as I know, they never offered a 5spd auto behind the Cummins... they started offering the 6spd (68RE or Aisen 6spd) in 2006 if I remember correctly? Should be a 48RE?

Are you sure he's not feeling the converter lockup in OD (4th) and calling that a "shift"?

What steve said. His truck has a 48RE... which is a 4 speed. There is no 5th gear. He must be feeling the converter lock (occurs around 49mph on a stock geared truck and light throttle).

The 6 speed wasnt available behind a 5. 9, only the 07. 5 and newer 6. 7's.

If the truck in question is a gas V8 w/five speed auto he's asking the question in the wrong forum.

Didn't you get the memo?

Name got changed the 1st of the month to the Turbo-Hemi Registry.

Every member has to put at least 22's on and great big stereo.

lol just kidding, couldn't help myself. Break from answering tech questions. :-laf

I didn't think the 47RE was offered in 04, so an 05 trans should have been the same as the 04. . unless it's the

I'm still trying to figure out the "knows it's a '05 by the filter size" thing.

47re stopped going in end of Dec. '02. 48re's from there on out.

Correct. 47re is 96-03. 48re is 05-early 07...

47re -96-early (Dec) '03

48re -Jan. '03 to '07 (5. 9's)

68re started in '07 behing the 6. 7's

going by your chart they didn't put automatics in for 1 year, '04 anyone?

enough confusion out there already.

maybe he just typed the wrong number... he is just trying to get some info for a friend... someone help the guy???? and no im not a stick in the mudd

1) it is not a 5 speed unless it's a manual gear box. Hope he can tell that if it has stick coming out of the floor.

2) the "5th" gear he THINKS he has is probably the TC locking up

3) the TC doesn't lock up until the the temp is within the correct parameters (NOT stone cold) and the speed is right around 50 mph

4) the only real difference between an '04 and '05 48re is the shift control, '04 cable actuated (some '04's), '05 (and some '04's) Shift Controller , TTVA , Shift Actuator on (drivers) side of trans

Fixed. Meant 04... fat fingered it on the phone.

My 48re doesn't seem to care about temp. It will lock up stone cold.
