After my first oil change it was slightly over full using 3 gallons of Shell Rotella 15W-40, switched to Mobil Delvac 1300 and it was just right. Not sure if oil vendors have slightly different volumes in the bottles, but my oil level has stayed constant regardless of which oil I use.

I changed my oil the other day with 4,800 miles on the truck. When the oil came out of the pan, it came out as though it was under an awful lot of pressure.

My 1900 and my 1993 both took twelve quarts total, with the filter holding one quart. This amount would fit nicely in my drain container which holds a bit more than three gallons.

Well the amount that came out overfilled the container and I put at least a quart on the driveway. So I'm thinking it was a least a quart to a quart and a half or so over full.

I put in a total of three gallons of Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w40 and used a NAPA Gold filter. This brought the level on the dipstick to where it should be... full...

I brought it to the dealer today for that and a couple of other items. I have an appointment next week and I'll hopefully have an answer to that and a few more issues I have.

Take care...

Well I got my truck back today from the dealer. The service manager called me and said all the injectors are fine and there was no fuel in the oil, the tech had never smelled low sulfer oil before??? He also said that the tech

must have over filled it. So I have been driving my truck around with it two to three quarts over full for 1000 miles. I would had rather had the oil a little low than that much over full. And my truck is making a clicking noise in the engine now. Which started awhile before I took it to the dealer. This place is starting to tick me off. First of all they didn't pay off my old truck for 2 months after me calling and going up there several times. Than they scatched my truck when they were fixing my leaking back glass. The scrathes were so bad that they won't buff out when they tried. Plus several other little things, and now this deal with the oil. I told them I wanted to speak to the owner and he is going to call me tomarrow and they said they would do what ever it takes to make it right. But I don't know what to tell them to do now to fix it???#@$%!

First off there are two possible causes.
1. They did NOT change out the oil filter
2. The oil container MAY be dual US/Metric marked the assumption is a 32 ounce quart and not 33. 8 ounce, litre. IF you get a metric container you could end up with and extra 21. 6 ounces of oil in the pan.
I mark my oil filter before a change so I can verify if in fact they did change it. It does not hurt to verify the container as to what it says for type CJ-4 and Volume.
Not trying to be a smart alex but I have been caught with both of the above.
Per the manual 12 US Quarts (384 Oz) - 11. 4 Litres (385. 47 Oz) Page 496
I have oil analysis done with every oil change and there is less than 0. 1% fuel in the oil and while it does make a lot of soot . 34% to . 48% (worst case 0. 81% new) this still does not account for the observed increased oil levels after an oil change. unless either 1 or 2 or both are factored in.

Same thing here with my new truck (1200 miles). Oil was over the full mark when first checked it at 500 miles. My truck has the same issues.

I changed oil yesterday and put 12q total and seemed just right. I checked it today after putting about 30 miles and way over the full mark.

I drained about 1 quart out and it read inbetween the safe mark. I put about 3/4q back in and it was just right. Ran the truck about 10 miles and it was reading high again.

I think when I released the pressure in the oil, it did something to this back pressure issue. I believe this because the1/4 to 1/2Q of oil I took out doesn't make a 3/4" difference on the stick.

I can't explain.

My truck just turned over 11. 7k miles this evening; the oil level was showing about . 25" to . 30" over the upper end of the "safe" mark just last weekend. I changed the oil and oil filter after driving the 57 mile one*way trip home from work; while changing clothes and gathering up my tools and drain pan, I left it running with the high idle engaged to 1500 rpm :-laf just to make sure it would all come out. :-laf

To my amazement, after refilling my new oil jugs with the old oil, I had about an inch less than full in the 3rd bottle. Total drain time : 48 minutes. I even "rocked" the truck back and forth to get as much out of the pan as possible. I was apprehensive about it being "over" full, but I'm now certain it wasn't.

I can't explain. :D

As others have mentioned, the oil seems to come out with more force than the 5. 9L HPCR's. My face and hair are a testament to that tonight; got to shampoo the hair with Palmolive dishwashing detergent. :-laf My six year old daughter, Lexi, remarked my face reminded her of one of the 101 Dalmatians. Draining the oil tonight reminded me of a cow peeing on a flat rock.

gsbrockman, did you happen to notice if your oil pan had the plastic feel to it? And yes when I drained mine it came out forcefully. could these conditions have something to do with an anti-drain back valve or something of the sorts? Bet sag2 knows!Amsoil sells an oil pressurizer that actually holds pressurized oil and when you turn the key to run position it builds oil pressure before the engine rotates maybe these new trucks have one from the factory or something of the sorts!

The oil pan on my 6. 7L appears to be identical to the one on my previous 2003 RAM 2500 305*555 grasmo.

This makes the 3rd oil change; I used OEM oil filters from Dodge twice but I used a Fleetguard LF16035 Stratapore last night. Coincidentally, I changed my friends oil just last weekend---he has a 2005 RAM 2500 MegaCab; using the same OEM filter, his oil did not come "gushing" out with the force mine did, and he runs 5W40 Shell Rotella-T Synthetic.

In my paranoia regarding what I "suspected" was an over-full condition, I ordered an oil analysis kit from Blackstone Labs last night. I guess the truth will come out when I mail out the sample. Anyone have any recommendations as to accepting or declining the TBN test ?

making oil

I took my truck back to the dealer yesterday to let them check the oil level like they had ask me to after putting over 500 miles on it. They had to drain 2 more quarts out of it?? The mechanic showed me a bulletin were dodge says up to 5% fuel in the oil is fine??????

Oil Level

I just turned over 8,000 miles yesterday on my 08 Mega. I have changed the oil two times and sent in to Blackstone Labs for analysis due to my concern for showing high level on the stick. The first test showed 31/2% fuel in oil and the second test showed 3%. Dodge might OK up to 5% but it still makes me think it could have a negative effect on the long term life of the engine.

still makes me think it could have a negative effect on the long term life of the engine.

I don't see how it couldn't have a neagtive effect on it??? Even with out the oil being mixed with fuel, that much oil in the pan is bad. My unckle has worked on over the road trucks for years and he has told me before that with to much oil the crank will slap the oil causing it to foam and take away it's ability to lubricate. Not sure if that applies on these trucks but I would think so!!

I can understand the 3% fuel in oil with the multiple injection events on an engine that is not broken in yet. I suspect (and hope) we will see those numbers drop through-out engine break in. If not, I would ask Cummins about their recommended maximum safe fuel in oil levels.

However, I'm still lost on what's happening with these trucks that are "making oil"? Is it improperly calibrated dip sticks or do we still not know what the problem is. Is this affecting just a small selection of trucks? I'm getting my 08 pretty soon here and want to know if I have to be on the lookout for this problem or if it was mostly an earlier model issue.

Thanks for the good info guys.

2 quarts is amost 20%, 5% would be closer to 1/2 quart, that 5% dog don't hunt with me! If you are getting that much extra fuel in the lube oil, something is wrong!

any fuel in the lube oil is bad. 5% is a stupid amount anything over 1% and i start to get worried. and fuel does not always show up on an oil sample if you get a bad burn. but it always shows up on the viscosity [v100C]

I was just wondering if the fellow getting the fuel in his oil is doing lots of short trips with the truck and not really having the oil get hot enough to evaporate out the fuel.

Earlier last week I received my analysis back from Blackstone Labs... ... fuel percentage was <0. 5%. Needless to say, I'm quite relieved. I'd post a copy of the results here if I knew how.

For those of you that are worried about your truck making oil, I'd say don't worry about it unless you've done an analysis... ... and I'm still trying to figure out why the oil level changes on the dipstick.

A free oil change came with my truck and they wanted it changed at 3000 miles. So I had them change it today. Like the previous posts, I checked it after I got home and it is at the top of the plastic. Has anyone figured this one out yet?
