My dad hauled cattle for a living back in the 50's and 60's - used 2 1/2 ton class trucks for that purpose. He NEVER had a single transmission failure tho' frequently overloaded - his last truck was a 59 Chevie with over a million miles on it when he left the business - several engine replacements, and the transmission WAS loose - but still functioning fine. These trannies in our trucks, if serviced properly and not abused, SHOULD last as long as the engine - maybe the occasional input/output seal, but that should be it!

Not all salespeople are evil. There are idiot salespeople, just like their are idiot customers.

I've only been selling for a year, and let me tell you, I've dealt with some real tools in my time, but you never hear about the bad customers, only the bad salespeople. I take pride in being honest with my customers, and giving good customer service long after the sale.

Maybe instead of going in with a chip on your shoulder, try going in with an open mind. If the salesperson acts like an idiot, walk and go to another dealer. You might just be suprised.

I know not all salespeople are evil. But they seem to have a very high concentration at this dealership. I have spoken to many salespeople over the years and I have no patience for the one's that try to sell you something you don't want.

I know what I want and I know how much it costs. I also have no problem paying a little more because everyone has to make a living and especially if I have been treated right. It's when they play games like "fair market value" BS that I can't stand.

Make no mistake, I HATE that dealership. I won't even go there for service. I got the 0216 code on my '02 yesterday and still won't go there. They would probably tell me my Bilstein's caused the code and try to void my warranty they are so inept.

I'm a straight shooter and I don't pull any punches. Don't waste my time using words you think I'll have to call Webster to figure out. Give it to me straight and you'll earn my business and more importantly my respect even if it's not what I want to hear.

End of rant.

Yep that sums it up!

Good post!

My biggest gripe with automotive salespeople is that they DON'T know much about what they sell! Ask anything more than a very trivial question about a specific vehicle, and they're totally lost - and then, rather than ADMIT they don't know, they attempt to baffle you with BS... :(

Walk into many dealerships - any brand - and ask what the compression ratio is on any given engine on their showroom, and chances are, you'll get a blank stare! There are other similar examples of subjects that are only slightly more technical than paint colors or upholstery availablilty - and you quickly outpace the knowledge of the person trying to sell you the vehicle.

Whatinhell ever heppened to STUDYING and KNOWING with decent detail what you are trying to make a living by selling to buyers? I'll flat-out guarantee you that if *I* planned on earning my living by selling vehicles, I would dern sure do as much as possible to know as much as reasonably possible what is UNDER the paint and upholstery as what is only seen looking at them from a distance!

No, I don't expect a salesperson to be a mechanical genious - but it doesn't seem unreasonable to have them know or easily provide differential and transmission gear ratios if asked...

Ain't no mercy out there Buddy it's all about the money! Nobody is going do or give you anything for nuthin! Just play smart hard ball! Been there done that and got the "T" shirt! My 2cents.

Thanks Gary! I forgot about that point and it's a big one!

Thanks to this board, most of us now know more than most people selling these trucks!

We're pulling a 13,500 lb 5th wheel that puts us on the road at 21,180 lbs GCW (21,500 lbs GCWR). Our puny old 2nd generation engine (see signature) knocked out the stock clutch, but hasn't phased the NV5600 6-speed at all!

Rusty

:( Can somebody pinch me please. 124,000 + turns on my 6 speed with the original clutch, edge comp, ats 3 piece manifold and 4 inch exhaust with a bhaf filter, FASS system and I just did a tow from Portland, Oregon to Bend, Oregon 3 days in a row at 23,000 lbs and NOW I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MY transmission NOT HOLDING UP because the dealer says they are having trouble with the 6 speed even though I got 14 mpg.

 Ok, I give up and say the BS meter is way up there for the dealer. ;)

I think we need "fear" non-functional and "defective" salesfolks FAR more than any problems we're likely to see as even REMOTELY common with the 5600... ;)

JEEZE, you mean you managed to score a salesperson who could actually READ? :D :D :D
Yes, we are all illiterate monkeys.

SKargo,

No you aren't. It just seems that well informed and/or trained salespeople are hard to come by that really understand customer service.

this thread reminds me of when I was in a certain PNW dealership some time ago before I got my 04. I went in asking for info regarding the new 04's to help me make a 2003 versus 2004 purchase decision.

the sales manager claimed to have a inside track into Cummins and that the new trucks were to have an "exhaust valve". He said the 2003 trucks were the thing to have and that a lot of guys were buying up the then-frozen 2003 inventory to avoid the 2004.

Well, of course the 2004s don't have an "exhaust valve", I quickly learned from Dodge themselves that the early 04s had the same engine as the 2003's, and that the big emissions hurdle was January, 2004, not the 2004 model year. And, as we all know, the 04. 5s don't even have exhaust gas recirculation.

there are some dealers and sales people that are just plain honest and helpful. others can't be trusted any further than you can throw them. I certainly won't darken the door of that dealership again. Thankfully I found a dealer that is both helpful and honest, and one that will receive my future business as well as referals. I hope the good apples outnumber the bad apples.

Skargo - it's obvious you are taking our uncomplimentary remarks concerning auto salesmen personally - as tho' they are intended for you - they are NOT!

But as with politicians, we tend to lump you all together, and the GOOD ones sorta get colored along with the MANY bad or ignorant ones - mechanics/service techs fall into the same category.

Certainly, there ARE many conscientious, knowledgeable sales/service workers scattered in amongst what often seem a vast majority of POOR ones - and when we DO manage to find a good one, they're worth their weight in GOLD! I have often traveled significant distances to return to the dealership or service shop where I have been exposed to reps who were well worth the extra effort on my part - hopefully, you are one of those, I'm sure we have a number scattered in with regular members here - Tommygun seems to be one such knowledgeable and trusted representative - but that reputation wasn't automatically GIVEN to him as he came aboard, he EARNED it by his comments and actions.

We all pretty much hafta do the same if we really want the respect of others here...

Sorry if I offended you personally with my comments.

No offense taken, it jst gets old. I guess the rep is deserved, after what I've seen some of the sheisters pull off.

If you have to be decietful, it just means your product knowledge, and your salesmanship are worthless.

I have had a few people act like I'm the scum of the earth, when in fact they were lying to me the whole time. It just gets frustrating sometimes. I have a remedy for that, a vacation in Vegas. I'm leaving in the morning!

Seeya next week.

I bet that if you ask 10 people on this board the same question about their truck, at least 60% would give you the same look. And they own the truck.
