saw an ad for an 88 dodge 4x4 diesel ,said trans went out, I assume it must be an auto, not sure. said only had 140000 mile on truck, what would be the best replacement for the trans for this vehicle? , not sure what might be interchangeable ,any suggestions, I haven't seen the truck yet, just trying to get some ideas if it looks like a decent deal

Could be either transmission, to be honest. I think the general consensus is to put in a 47RH with a lockup convertor if you have the cash. If not, the 518 or 727 would be good, too.

If it has the Getrag, just rebuild it and put it back in there.

turns out the truck is an 88 with a transplanted 92 motor and 518. the story is that the trans shifts ok when cold ,when warm ,it starts in second. I am not familiar with this trans or its workings. is it a good trans or be better to maybe switch to something else? any idea of cost related to rebuilding this one or changing out completely? the pic's of the truck look nice and might be worth it ifthe transmission thing isn't too expensive

The first CTD that came with an auto had 727s ( 3 speed no O/D ) The 518 is an O/D version of the 727. I like that trans. If it has a 92 engine does it have the charge air cooler to go with it? BTW the first Dodges with Cummins were 1989s. They came out in the fall of 88. Shadrach

turns out it is an 88 1/2 ton truck with a transplant motor, dana 44 front end, 9 1/4 dodge rear end, looks nice ,stacks, decent body,, I owned a 90 w-250 for about 15 yrs, but I am familar with stick shifts not autos.
