Had a friend call me and wanted some info, he has a 91 and lost his guages, along with that when he pulls the lights switch out to first stage clearance lights come on, when he pulls it out the rest of the way the only lights lit are the headlights??

The switch is a know problem... .

He needs to investigate the switch itselft.

It will heat up over time and wear. This is especially true if halogen lights with higher wattage are used or if extra driving lights are wired into the circuit.

There is a little recessed button in the bottom of the switch. You use a tiny screw driver or plastic piece, push in the recessed button and pull the light switch knob out.

From there you can remove the light switch itself and take a look at it, as well as the connections/wires.

He may find they are burnt/blackened/brittle... . if so, replace the switch and use a relay for ANY extra lighting. This is especially true if he has uprated the headlights and/or has camper/trailer lights wired into that circuit.

Next, he should start checking his grounds... this is particularly true of the one small dia. black wire ground on the negative terminal on the battery... it leads to a lame little screw which attaches to the rad support. Replace that ground wire and add another of significant size, say 4-ga. for a good chassis ground contact.

Try that and see if it helps... .
