Burning driftwood in a Woodstove?

A Hillbillys Valentine (Ya'll pay tenshin)

I am curious if anyone has ever removed the transmission from a 92 or newer Bonneville? The transmission in my "beater", a 92 Pontiac Bonneville, puked 2nd gear and I am trying to determine if it is worth my time to take it out and reinstall it or pay to have it done. I am pretty competent when it comes to twisting wrenches but I have never removed a transmission from a FWD car before. I have more time than $$$ but I also don't want tackle a project this is going to turn into a nightmare.

Thanks for the info.

Oh, no! Somebody slipped a Dodge transmission into a GM. How bad is it? Does it need to come out for sure? Maybe someone here can help trouble shoot, or give other ideas to look at.

Not sure we can call it a WMTDR event, if it's not a Dodge, but I'm certainly willing to lend a hand. Call me.

Don't qoute me on this, but I do believe you have to drop the "frame " assembly on this vehicle to do the job,a real pain in the b***s if you want my opinion, especially if you don't have a lift available. If you have time on your hands then maybe you'd want to try it, me I have a buddy that owns a shop to handle all of my trans problems !! :p

WOOO, GM has had a rap for bad trannys long before Dodge picked up the ball :). I don't know if you remember the THM-200, especially behind a 5. 7 diesel! The average GM has 2 transmissions and 1 motor in the first 12,000 miles!

Those things were junk when they first came out. I remember the first one I "tried" to overhaul. I could not even get the front pump out it was stuck so bad. Out came the 200, in went a 350, and the customers were happier then when they got the car new!

As far as the Buick, Don't know about the 9?'s vantage, but after the first GM front wheel drive I did in the mid 80's, I swore NEVER AGAIN! (And I was doing it to make a living).

Thanks for the replies.

I agree the T-200 was a junk transmission but I had better luck with that transmission in my last beater than I did in this transmission in the Bonneville :)

boonsur,

Thanks for the offer. I'll catch up with you this weekend.

You have a 440-T4 and they are not hard to pull. You don't have to pull the entire subframe like on a Ford Taurus. If I was closer I would be willing give you a hand. But I can try to answer any questions you may have.

I was reading though the manual I have for the car. They only dedicated 3 pages to removing the transmissoin

lgibson,

It appears the subframe splits. Does this sound about right? It all stays in place on the split correct? That is, do I have to remove any additional parts not related to getting the transmission out of the car just to split the subframe? Thanks.

The subframe splits into a "L" shape. To support the engine I would use two phone books. One on each fender on opposite corners. Then place a bar acoss the engine bay and chain up the engine.

Don't get discourage about the book. It really is a simple FWD to do.
