I am looking into swapping my Dana 80 (open diff and drum brakes) for a Dana 70 (Posi and disk brakes) from a 2001. I know that it will bolt in, that the gear ratio's are the same and that it may be about 2" wider.

My question is this: Will the reduction in axle load capacity be large enough to be concerned and will it hold up behind a manual?

I do not have a cab over, but I do haul materials sometimes and want to still pull trailers. My engine has been modified but can't be more than 300-350hp and 800ftlbs. Also I am running a South Bend SDD3250 behind my nv4500.

The main reason for the swap is I need a traction device and would prefer disk brakes. Also I am getting the axle for a good price.

Thank you for any thoughts on the topic.

I know it wont limit your ability to dig some more fence holes today, break a couple more waterlines and work in the yard to keep the wife happy :-laf:-laf

I just completed a Dana 70 Drum (1997) to Dana 80 Disc (2001) last week. You will be going from a 11,000 lbs axle to a 10,000 lbs, 11. 25" ring pinion gear to 10. 5" ring pinion gear and 1. 6" axles to 1. 50".

You will need to lengthen the drive shaft approximately . 5 to 1. 0 inch.

You will need new u-bolts plate.

You will need new energency brake cable.

If it is a daily driver, no problem.

Hmmm, So with the CC and a two piece drive line it will be to short. Good to know.

Did you use a factory 01 brake cable?

and I plan on either using the plates from the donor truck or do a ubolt flip and use top plates.

Also the axle is coming of of my friend's truck who is swapping in an AAM so I get all his parts, cables etc.

I also figure that having a 10k axle with the 35" tires that are rated at 3250 each means it will never be at full load.

How much was the D80 from the 01?

It's my understanding that the Dodge uses a Dana 80 hybrid, D-80 center section with D-70 spindles and hubs. It uses 1. 50 dia. 35 spline axles and is rated for 8,000 lbs.

The Dodge Dana 70 uses 1. 37 dia. 32 spline axles and is rated for 6,500 lbs.

The D-80 has 4" axle tubes with the D-70 using 3. 50" tubes.
