I am looking into swapping my Dana 80 (open diff and drum brakes) for a Dana 70 (Posi and disk brakes) from a 2001. I know that it will bolt in, that the gear ratio's are the same and that it may be about 2" wider.
My question is this: Will the reduction in axle load capacity be large enough to be concerned and will it hold up behind a manual?
I do not have a cab over, but I do haul materials sometimes and want to still pull trailers. My engine has been modified but can't be more than 300-350hp and 800ftlbs. Also I am running a South Bend SDD3250 behind my nv4500.
The main reason for the swap is I need a traction device and would prefer disk brakes. Also I am getting the axle for a good price.
Thank you for any thoughts on the topic.
