I have a 99 2500 without anti lock brakes.

When I do a "PANIC" stop, the rear brakes seen to unlock and stop only with the front brakes. This has happened several times and is most unsettling.

Any Ideas out there???

All trucks have rear anti-lock brakes - federal law says they are unsafe without rear antilocks. The anti-lock option adds antilock to the front brakes only.

What you are experiencing is the rear antilocks releasing under heavy braking. It will do it on loose road surfaces or washboards. My 95 used to do it often. Just get used to it.

On one morning I was in my 95 auto CTD. It was in 2WD on a snow packed road. I was dropping my daughter off in front of her school. A line of cars was slowly idling to the front of the school. I hit the right very slow speed where the rear antilock figured the wheels should not stop turning. So it released the rear brakes, while the fronts went into lockup. With the rears still spinning from the motor torque and no braking action, the fronts just slid along - quickly approaching the car in front. MAJOR PUCKER FACTOR. Quickly realized what was going on and popped the gear selector into neutral. And these things are supposed to prevent accidents? I could only imagine if my wife had been driving. :(

That is "normal" for RWAL (Rear Wheel Anti Lock) brakes.

I have it & hate it. It is annoying on a good day; scares the crap outta ya the rest of the time. You learn to try not to brake late on rough roads if avoidable (slow down early!). If it catches you by surprise, just bear down HARDER on the brake pedal.

This is the biggest reason I would have to trade in my truck, *if* I could afford to. :(

I special ordered my 95 and I paid $500. 00 extra for anti-lock brakes on the front. I thought it would be useless to have them on the rear only.

Thanks for the response. Not only did it cause a "MAJOr pucker" IT DID CAUSE AN ACCIDENT!!!

Elderly lady pulled out of driveway onto dry smooth asphalt and at 25 miles per hour

seemed to start to stop and then rolled hard into her.

In my estimation VERY unsafe. Can they be disconnected????

For some reason the 2500's have a height sensing valve that really screws things up (the 3500's do not). Do a search on this topic as there has been some interesting fixes. This is also the cause of many overheating their front brakes (by not allowing the rears to operate properly).
