Your block heater and a timer is your best friend for warming up.
Cummins says anything more than 10 minutes at idle is considered excessive, this can be easily eclipsed if no block heater and trying to warm a cold engine up at cold ambient temperatures.
I use my bumper mounted block heater pretty much anytime ambient temperatures drop below 25*F. Start, clear windows off and drive easy. If I'm towing anything or the windows are frozen over I'll allow a few extra minutes but I generally keep idle times as short as possible, especially before operating temps are achieved.
I always avoid the EB for warm up. The programming at high idle restricts the VGT slightly as is, more is not always better.
With the EGR and lower volume of coolant in the block my 6.7 heats up 3-4x as fast as my 5.9 ever did.
Less so on the 2007.5 and newer 6.7L’s since they have water cooled turbos.I read on some post that cooling down was more important then warming up. Not sure this applies to our friends in colder weather. Also, was advised to leave the EB on always to help clean out the turbo soot.
Check behind your bumper on the passenger side. My block heater cord was tucked in and tough to find when I got the truck.
When I auto start my truck from the house and its extremely cold out, high idle will kick in, in about 30 seconds, and EB turns on as well. I have heat in 5 minutes from that point no joke. I know the EB turns on because you can hear the turbo screaming, especially from the passenger side of the truck. Truck is bone stock.
I also know the EB is on, because I have an Edge CTS2 Monitor and when the truck is high idling, VGT van position is at 100% and as soon as I tap the brake High Idle turns off and Vane position changes.
