Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) A new kind of lift pump FAILURE!

About a month ago I purchased the truck listed in my signature and became a member of the TDR. The truck has 45,000 miles on it.



I decided that I would just change the lift pump for piece of mind so I picked one up from the local cummins dealer.



On Saturday I did the swap which took all of 15 minutes. The red wire was not even connected to the lift pump anymore and the black was barely hanging on. They were so corroded they had fallen off. Obviously, the lift pump had not been working AT ALL. No wonder why the truck seemed to be unusually slow and took forever to start after a fuel filter change.



Well, the new one is in and the truck feels GREAT! It's the new design so the same problem can't happen again.

Uummmmm... I don't want to say this, you may want to go somewhere (Auto Zone) where you can get your ECM codes (OBDII) checked for free, or your local Cummins shop to have the VP44 checked out. If the truck has had a "Non Functioning LP" for some time, the VP44 injection pump may have been damaged due to lack of fuel.



You should probably invest in some gauges (Fuel pressure, EGT at least) so you can keep an eye on the failure prone LP's.
