On Sunday I added a #11 cam plate and the AFC spring kit to a my '98 12v 5-speed. The only thing I didn't do per instructions was back the star wheel all the way off when I changed the spring. I've been rotating it toward the motor in 10-click increments and doing test drives and watching for smoke.

The only problem is that it now takes a few revolutions to start when the engine is cold. It used to fire right up on the first rev. And it starts fine when warm. I'm not sure whether this may be due to starving for fuel or flooding.

Any insight would be appreciated.

BTW: Love the kick in the pants when the boost comes on!

JGK,

Check your idle speed first. If your idle is a little low, the truck will take more revolutions to start in the morning. Try pressing the accelerator when cranking and see if it fires right up.

I don't remember the exact details, but I remember someone complaining of hard starts that were cured by increasing the pre-boost fuel setting on the back of the AFC diaphram. I know the AFC spring kit tells you to adjust this all the way out.

If the idle is adjusted properly, try turning the pre-boost adjustment in a couple of rounds.

I hope this helps. Write back and tell us what you find.

Strick-9,

You are correct about setting the screw on the housing (of course) and I did just that - backed it off then screwed it in with my fingers until it just started to snug up, then set the lock nut.

I'll try starting with a little throttle and see what that does. Then I'll spin that screw in a bit. I'll let you know here what happens.

Thanks muchly!

BTW: It seems to idle at the same revs as it did before Sunday, so I fiddle with that last.

1/2 turn in on the stud will help a lot. Also you probably have way too much preload on the new AFC spring. Yo probably won't end up with more than 20-30 clicks leaner than full rich on the star wheel with that spring.

Strick-9,

Your suggestion regarding the setting on the AFC diaphram was right on. I screwed it in about a turn + and it started on the first rotation this morning. Thank you.

Joe,

I've been backing the wheel off a little at a time - I'm at about 70 (est. ) clicks off stock and the response is getting much better. I installed the medium spring as recommended. Don't know how far I have left 'till I bottom out but it's about where I like it. Watching for smoke in the rear views.

Thanks again to both of you.

Jay
