The 6. 7 with its emissions came out in 2007, BDaugherty. Anything built after 1/1/07 has the DPF and EGR. Some 07 are 5. 9, built prior to 1/1/07, some are not.

The Common Rail is an awesome technology. I owned an 08 and now I own a 98 12-valve. For power, on the fly tuning, and all around drive-ability I'd take a common rail every day of the week. The 12 valve is a decent truck, but the newer trucks just beat it hands down. Hell, the 68rfe is light years ahead of the 727-based transmissions.

If my wallet allowed for it, I'd be back in a common rail truck. But for now, the 12-valve will have to do. Oh, and yeah, my 47re overdrive unit took a dump last week. I need a new tail housing case, and all I was doing was just driving home when it let loose.

Advantages?
Depends on if you like to work on your own vehicles engine.
CR *requires a scanner & a chart for the codes & a flow chart to find the problem. 12V does not
Injectors
12V costs $600-1200 & very easy & fast to install
CR $600 EACH & not very fast or easy to install
CR >senors for everything & they aren't cheap to replace. 12V has very few sensors & aren' that expensive to replace.
CR runs quieter, 12v doesn't but thats what sound proofing is for
12v gets better mpg
1998 on require smog checks(CA) & you can not change a lot of things on the engine
I like my 06 but would buy a 12v, if I could find one that meets my want list.

The two primary advantages of CR are that (1) injection timing is 'infinitely' variable and (2) that injection events consist of more than one injection.

CR engines are nice and clean operating for the most part,,,easy to crank up power,,quiet,,,etc,,,but will NEVER come anywhere near the reliabilty and low end torque of a nice done 12Valve,,,CR engines go through injectors like crazy,,,,for the price of ONE CR injector you can get a full set of 12 V injectors,,,a 12 Valve will almost never leave you stranded at the side of the road,,,while a CR engine with a million different electronics hung on it ,,anyone of which will leave you at the side of the road,,the new trucks are definitely nicer to ride in,,,but those electronic engines suck,,,i do like my 2007 Megacab dually 4X4,,,it mostly stays in the garage except when i need to carry people,,my favorite truck is still my 96 3500 dually 4X4,,,it's NEVER let me stranded in 15 years and 500,000 KM's,,,also has been running alternative fuels for 450,000 of those miles,,SAME INJECTORS,,,passes emmision testing every year,,which is more than i can say for the 07,,,seems like the newer the trucks the more problems and the cheaper built they are,,,my Megacab will be getting a built 12v motor the minute we can get the electronics figured out,,i want to keep my luxuries in my 07 LOL. . that will make the best truck ever,,Megacab luxury,,12Valve torque and great mileage,,and the biggest advantage of all,,RELIABILTY,,,,,

sorry Cosmo,,in my neck of the woods... . ALL pickup truck diesels require the exact SAME emmision norms,,,there is a specific figure you have to meet regardless of the year of the truck,,

Well if that's the case, the target must be really relaxed. The changes made to the Cummins 12-24 valve, 24-hpcr, hpcr-6. 7, have all been done for emissions reasons. If they're testing at the same level, it's going to be no contest for the newer trucks to meet. Net result is a bunch of newer trucks can run fairly dirty compared to when they were new and still pass...

YUP,,that's pretty much the case,,BUT NEW trucks dont need to pass an emmision test UNTIL they are 5 or 7 years old,,,might be why the same emmission test specs???

A truck with no emissions equipment at all is going to be dirtier than a truck with a cat, particulate filter, egr, def, etc. , when brand new and five, ten years down the road. It's natural to expect that a five to ten year old truck will pollute slightly more than when it was showroom new, but if the standards are the same for an 06 as they are for an 86, either the 86 has to be squeaky clean, or the 06 can basically fail it's like-new standards. Right?

In Cali the inspection is visual to ensure all of the OEM smog equipment is in place, no MIL and a snap idle test. So as long as you don't produce visual smoke during that test, no MIL and your smog equipment is in place you pass. This is done every other year. I set my SMARTY at 1/2 power and put the CAT back in and have no issues passing.

sorry bud,,i didnt make the rules,,only reporting it,,,and yes thats pretty much it,,,although,,most emission testing is done to put money in government bank accounts,,NOT to actually reduce pollution,,,so making sure most vehicles pass easily is important to keep the tax dollars rolling in,,,

We are relying on a govt. agency to decide that we need engines that you can't smell or see the exhaust
I owned an 06 vw tdi. It had a slight diesel smell when it was cold, but a clean bleach smell when it was warmed up. It would only smoke if you floored it. It was a clean little SOB! But was too dirty to meet 07 emmisions. I don't buy it, however I am not as trusting of the govt. as others. I am all for clean air but this is ridiculous. Like I said before Americans are probably doing more damage to the environment buy buying chinease products than we would ever have done with Diesel engines.

What are the emmision standards in Europe? I know they use to be less than U. S. Don't they have a lot more diesels in Europe ?

And now Big Brother's worried about trans fatty acids. No issues with a shrinking workforce,14 million more food stamp recipients, spiriling deficit. Gee Whiz.

I guess Obozo has priorities,,,making life better for Americans isn't one of them,,making money for HIS backers IS,,,

I have wondered about this myself, as it's the only option if I want to drive a truck built in this century! I already own one CR, 08 Grand Cherokee with the 3. 0 liter Mercedes turbo diesel. I haven't had any issues with it, currently at 120K.

I would like to hear from some guys out there with 500K+ on CRs.

BTW Cummins STILL sells the 12V p-pump engines for marine service. They are sold as "recons" lol. . but they are brand new, 12Vs. So, you can go buy a new 330hp 12V long block from Cummins and drop it in your truck. Down side is they are really proud of the marine engines!

That's because boat people have money.
