My Sun Xtender agm batteries made by Concord Batteries are getting old. New ones cost around $365 each. Can anyone out there recommend a good group 27 100 amp agm battery that doesn't cost a arm and a leg specificaly made for solar application?
I am not familiar with the name but I purchased, from Sams Club, two fishing boat trolling motor batteries for my fiver, for around 80 each, and they have lasted over five years so far.
We just had a new Sam's open in Auburn Alabama. A friend of ours that works there says " Everything that Sam's sells has a lifetime warranty". I will check into this.
I use East Penn Deka group 31 AGM's in my boat, and they've been terrific - 7 seasons so far and still pretty much like new. Deka's Sea Mate AGM's are sold under many labels. Look for model 8A27M if you want a 27, 8A31DTM if you want a 31.
I'm not spec'd up on solar, just boat/RV batteries and charging systems, so I don't know what you mean about a battery "made for solar". I'd have thought that with a proper regulator and charging system, set correctly for the recommended charging voltages of the particular deep cycle battery you choose, you wouldn't be concerned about the battery being "made for solar".
Get batteries from a local commercial battery supplier and you'll pay a lot less than from specialty suppliers (like boat or RV stores) in my experience.
Thanks for the reply. Generally speaking, it is my understanding, that a AGM "made for solar" simply means that it is a pure deep cycle and can stand many "deep discharges" as compared to a "cranking" type application as a truck battery. And yes I have been looking at the East Penn Deka batteries. I spoke to a dealer in Tucson and he has what he calls a"Magna Power" AGM made by East Penn. Have you ever heard about a Magna Power battery?
If it's EP Deka and the model number matches up, I believe it's just one of the many labels under which they are sold. Another issue with a particular brand might be warranty length.
Don't know how much difference it makes, but some folks suggest looking at the date of manufacture stamped on the batteries - should be fairly recent and should match if you're putting more than one together in a bank. Probably more important for old flooded battery type.
Thanks for the reply. Good info having to do with the model numbers. I am going to call East Penn today and I will ask them that if they use the same numbers for different brand names. Interesting
Mick I purchased these a couple of years ago and have had no problems. Don't know about the "Designed for solar". They are 90 Amphours. Hope this helps.
