Well, the first major player component failed on me last night as a result of my BOMBing. The clutch slave cylinder blew up! #ad
No warning at all. I was towing a 2000 lb trailer and I pulled off the interstate, came up to a stoplight, and POP! Clutch pedal went limp. I jumped out and under the truck for a quick looksee and saw fluid running off the cylinder. #ad

You know,it's a good thing I disabled my clutch safety switch a while back. The only way to get the truck/trailer out of the intersection was to shut it off,put it into gear, and start it in 2nd gear to get it rolling. The thing that I really lucked out on,is this happened only three blocks away from my home,so I was able to creep home safely.

It seems I've jinxed myself wondering how long that plastic POS would last. My new HiPo clutch has a stiffer than stock pedal and I'm sure it may have played a part in the slave cylinders failure. The only way of getting new slave cylinder is with an entire assembly with a new clutch master cylinder. So it's going to be an expensive test to see how long the next one lasts. #ad

Mike... sorry to hear about that. Let us know if ya need anything. I do have the trailer if ya want to haul it somewhere to work on it... like out here!

Ouch, that sucks. Mike I thought something like this would happen... . your clutch seems almost 4x stiffer than mine (that is probably why mine slips). Hmmmmmmmmmmm this gives me an idea..... CLUTCH BOMB. Braided steel lines, and a custom slave cylinder. I wonder how much that would cost? Just a suggestion.

Andy, that has been discussed. Also the concept of a dual master to help overcome the high pedal pressure of the aftermarket single disc clutches. A decent slave/master cylinder setup would be a terrific modification.

MikeR, I had to replace my slave a year ago. You right on with your POS evaluation of the stock component. I couldn't get a rebuilt slave so I purchased the entire master/slave assembly from Dodge for about $160 or so. I hope you are able to locate a component with better quality. If I knew this auto was gonna hold up I'd send you mine #ad

MikeR, Sorry to hear about your problem. I guess it's time to Bomb the Clutch Slave Cyl!

One idea. Clippard Ind. in Cinti Ohio makes thousands of different Cylinders. The length, Diameter, Throw and mounting options are endless. They make corrision resistant, Stainless and Brass. Before you get excited I think they only make pneumatic powered ones. You might call or Email them http://www.clippard. be/company/index.shtml and ask about compatibility with Hydraulic / or brakefluid. They might know some one who makes what we need. From past experience I think they had Viton available for the piston seal. That should work. Good luck Kurt

Mike. . try Napa,Brian [Psycostroker sp?] got one there for his ferd and was told they were only available as full kits from the ford dealer also. . just a suggestion worth looking into

Now, there's an aftermarket product for some manufacturer out there: a new slave cylinder made of high quality billet aluminum/steel/stainless(?) & aircraft grade internals, hoses, etc. , made to withstand higher pressures.
Maybe one already exists in the racing world, like NASCAR or NHRA?
Just an idea.

Major bummer Mike, at least you have Cummins power for backup. Did you ever get very far with finding a stainless steel or any better-than-stock plastic piece when you were researching clutches?

Mike, have you seen this topic in the Products forum? https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/003490.html
Here is a response from "South Bend Clutch":
"If I am not mistaken the slave that came with the getrag trans. is heavier duty. It went with the Sach cover when it was OEM. After they switched to the Luk system (which has a lighter pedal effort) with the new process trans. they lightened up the hydraulics. I will try to find out if they are interchangable unless someone already knows. Our (MU 1938 CON FE) is reported to hold this kind of horse power with little pedal effort and it has a 3700lb plate load pressure plate. Peter"

Thanks for the suggestions by My6eatsV8s and Willyslover,I just called up Napa and they said they have just the slave cylinder in stock. I can get it at wholesale for about $54 bucks! It seems BOMBing the clutch hydraulics is in order, but I'll need to put in this one to get me on the road.

Since I'm not going to be using a factory part (OEM for a 1st gen as opposed to OEM for a 2nd gen truck),I don't know if there is going to be a difference in sturdiness between the two from Napa. But while I'm there,I'll see if they have a different listing for a 1st gen to compare side by side. Hopefully it's a bit sturdier than my original.

We had trouble with than when doing Articat's clutch.

Did you get a NAPA part number?

I would love to be ready, as I do my JD Sach's this wednesday.

David,
I remember Articats' post about him popping the piston out during his clutch install. Adam(My6) told me that bleeding the system will be a PITA,but I have vacuum bleeders at work,so I'll see if that eases the job. Napa gave me a P/N 360-051,will pick it up on my way to work monday night.
