I'm looking to get some air horns. What are you guys using, where did you purchase them, and where did you install them on you rig? If you don't want to post prices, please include web links. Thanks y'all!

I'd also be interested in the volume and tone quality comparing (1) plastic horns to the chromed zinc and (2) air horns using a storage tank to those using only a compressor.

Has anyone put together a setup without purchasing everything as a package?

Rickson's sells Grover air horn kits, complete with compressor, tank, etc. for around $200. Grovers are original equipment on Peterbilts, Freightliners, etc. Hadleys are nice, but cost more, seem to be the better quality choice for roof mounting... I have my Grovers mounted behind the front bumper.

I have a set of Grovers on my dually. Out of nessesity more than desire, I mounted mine under the front bumper on the paassenger side. I have a western snow plow frame mount so they are well protected there and look good. Only the bells stick out from under the bunper. A roof mount was out for me due to my slide in camper, not enough clearence when the camper is on the truck. They work great! Highly recomended, both the horns and Ricksons.

SOLER,

Bought a set of Bully air horns by Hadley, and mounted mine on the underside of the hood. Bought them out of the JC Whitney catalog for around $230 for the kit. They sound great, just ask my wife. Love to blast her when she's walking across the front of the truck in a crowded parking lot!! Embarasses the He!! out of her. However, she's not to happy when she gets back in. I'm just havin fun, HEE-HEE!! Good luck.

As you can see in my sig, I too have Hadley Bullys. I think they sound like a diesel locomotive.
I mounted the horns on the cross member behind the front bumper. Only had to drill one hole. I bought mine at camping world for around $215. 00. The kit has everything you need with good instructions. Took me about 1/2 day to install. Air horns are the ONLY way to go!

Where did you guys put the lanyard for your horns?

No lanyard. Most guys wire the horn relay to the OEM wiring of the stock horns (the compressor requires a 10-amp circuit). I have the Grovers. They survived my accident (haven't re-installed them yet) so you know they're TOUGH. #ad

Any internet locations to buy Grover kits?

Hey DieselB59. If my compressor bites the big one, where can I get the Firestone compressor and a Bendix tank. How do they compare to the size of the Hadley components? I would like to mount them in the same place. My horns still work (knock on wood) and I mounted the switch by the factory horns. So far, I see no reason to shut them off.

Now I need to figure out where to put them in my wife's Saturn. She needs to sound off too!

I have thought about putting in a 10 gallon or so air tank under the truck, and using this instead of an on board compressor. I have plenty of compressed air at home, so I would put a fitting in the front of the truck to air up the tank every now and then. I could even put an air gauge in the cab to monitor the pressure. I need more air than the little tanks that come with the horn kit. I go to the lake, and it would be nice to have enough on board air to blow up the tubes and the towed stuff.

Check out www.sunperformance.com for air tanks and compressors, they even come recommended by Rickson's. Your air horns can be hooked up to their tank, and the system can be used to inflate tires quickly and easily.

I mounted the push button switch to the knee bolster panel just to the left of the ash tray door. Easy access and I didn't want to eliminate the stock horns for state inspection reasons.

I too bought the Hadley Bully kit. I mounted mine on the crossmember behind the front bumper. I have it wired in to the horn switch with a toggle switch to use or not use them. My compressor and tank went bad the first year and I upgraded them with a heavier duty Firestone compressor and a Bendix tank. They work just great now.

You can get them from www.awdirect.com or BD Power (BD sells the Firestone compressor and tank kit with a small tank) I got the Bendix tank at a truck parts store around the corner from me. The Firestone compressor is much beefier than the Hadley one. All I needed to do was surf the brass fittings drawers at the local Sears Hardware store for the fittings I needed to make it all marry together.
