Hey Guys,

Today I decided to pop the hood and check the oil level in my truck. Much to my surprise, my airraid cold air filter was detached from the intake tube and lying in the bottom of the box.

Upon inspection, the band clamp seemed like it was still at the original tightness. I looked at it a little closer and found that the rubber part of the filter that the band clamp goes around was split about 25% of the way around. Has anybody else had this problem before? I have had the filter on my truck for about 45,000 miles.

They do have a great warranty and I plan to send the filter back to be replaced, but I'm considering switching brands, probably to the AFE PG7. I swabbed the intake tube right behind where the filter detached and it was full of road dust and grime from not having the filter on. I have no idea how long it's been off or if any damage was done to the turbo. Any suggestions or more info on what might have happened to my turbo if anything?

Thanks!

Pull the intake hose at the turbo and inspect the impeller blades. If possible, take a picture of them and post it here.

Sure makes me want to keep a closer eyeball on MY filter assembly! "WHO-TA-THOUGHT?" How long since the last oil change/ time filter was in place? Was the filter cleaned reciently... with "approved" solvent? Just trying to figure out what might have caused the rubber to deteriorate. If Mr. Silicon is out of sight hi in your oil sample, it might be time for a turbo and intercooler cleaning. Not the WORST job in the book, but... I'm keeping an eyeball on MY filter assembly... :)

Okay, so I went out and took some pictures which I will post here in a few minutes... I think the turbo looks okay, but who am I to say, I'm not a mechanic. I did find a few other problems though... argh. . The "flexible" hose between the turbo output and the harder hose that goes to the intercooler seems pretty flexible and there are some fibres "blowing" out of the side of it in a couple places. I'm assuming that isn't normal? I'll post that pic also.

Also noticed some oil coming out of the sides of the engine. I don't think it was due to them spilling it during an oil fill because it looks clean all around the valve cover.

Pics coming soon...

Okay, here are the pics. The first two are of the turbo inlet.

This one shows where I wiped a bit of the dirt out of the intake tube right behind where the filter normally attaches:

This one is of the hose I was talking about. Notice the black fibers coming out of each side of the hose? I'm assuming this is not normal. What is this part called? Does too much boost cause this? Is there an upgraded replacement available?

Now for the last thing I noticed. There is oil coming out of each side of the motor. It doesn't appear to have leaked down from a messy oil change. Thoughts on this? Here is a pic of each side so you can see where the oil is coming out:

Any help is appreciated! (early is good considering I need to hopefully use it tomorrow)

Thanks!

David, the oil dampness around the valve cover is pretty typical. You might pop the valve cover and tighten the 6 bolts that hold the lower VC girdle in place.

What the heck is this that I'm pointing to in the attached picture?

I agree with Vaughn about the oil seepage... I wouldn't worry about it. But that turbo looks nasty, and so does the intake tube. You can assume the remainder of the intercooler and intake manifold look the same. I can't explain the fibers on that intercooler line, but it should definetly be replaced. It may have holes in it.

If this happened to me, I'd probably pull all the intake hoses, intercooler hoses, intercooler, and intake horn to clean everything out. I'd also check the condition of the heater grids.

On edit: the compressor outlet and the intercooler inlet look like they're quite mis-aligned. Could that have resulted in tears in that hose?

rbattelle, I had inquired about what your arrow is pointing at when I went to the dealer about 9 months ago. I originally noticed it when I removed my silencer ring. I cannot remember why it was like that, but they said something about a timing mark?

:-laf You should've asked them what the base ignition timing is on this type of turbo. :-laf

I suspect that's just where Holset machined it to balance the impeller. Maybe it's got some dirt on it now so that's why it looks kinda funky (greenish hue to my eyes, but I've been told I don't see color shades very well  ). I think there was a thread on here awhile back where someone noticed that on a new truck and panicked, but we all decided it was just for balancing.

Okay, I'm really sad. I put my factory filter assembly back in place last night until I get something better again. Today on the way home from work I could barely hear the sound of the whistle that once filled my cab. :(

Yeah there's always one blade that's been ground on a bit for balancing. At 120,000 RPM it's gotta be pretty close :)

My intercool boot did the same thing, then ripped open and I lost all boost. I was towing a 40 trailer at night up th mountain and boom. I check everything out and had to finish the trip with no boost. Switched to silicon boots and no problems since.

Where'd you get the silicone boot kit?

-Ryan

myself, i am waiting on mr bob's distributing complete silicon hose kit for under hood for the 3rd gens. the 2nd gen one looks so nice in that blue color they com in, i want that for my 3rd gen

Nobody made a kit for my 2003 so I found that mcmaster carr sold it. I ordered there 3 foot section and cut to fit. Was real cheap to get. I also did all the other boot while I was at it. At 40 lbs of boost it was only a matter of time.

Me too, except I don't like the "Mr. Bob's" logo painted on the hoses.
