Has anyone travel the Alaskan Hwy recently? Is diesel fuel readly available in both Canada and Alaska? I can go approx 300 miles
pulling my 5th wheel. I would like to know if I need an aux tank, or any special spare parts.

Geisinger... I just returned from a trip to Alaska. I had no problems at all getting fuel
anywhere along the Alcan. I carried an extra 10 gallons just in case and never even came close to using any of it.

americana... explain please.

I did the whole loop through Alaska and Canada in '99 and never had any problems with fuel, except the price.
You can easily pay for a spare tank, plus save a lot of bucks, by needing to fill up only in the larger cities. The fuel prices charged out in the boonies in Alaska, and in the Yukon are usually dramatically higher.

John... I have made only one trip to Alaska. I had thought about venturing up the Dalton, but after two flat tires on my ATV trailer I changed my mind... Arlan

I have 38 trips over the Ak. Hyw. Never any problem getting fuel. We are leaving in the morning with our 37' 5th whl. for trip no. 39 looking for sunshine.
I also have been up the Dalton Hyw. to the Beaufort Sea twice. It is rough on tires and fuel not as available as the Ak. Hyw.

Thanks for the information. I feel more comfortable about the planned trip next summer.

Be sure and buy a magazine called the Mile Post before you go. It lists all the services on the ALCAN. I also read a post on one of the RV sites from a couple that just completed a trip to Alaska and back. They took an extra 5 gal can with diesel fuel as a back up and never used it. Good Luck on your trip. I'll be doing the same trip in 2002.

Jack in Alaska,

Have a good trip. I'm sure JR will keep the "cabin" in use once the snow flies. See you in the spring.

Nutts - Dad is gone and the snow is starting to fly..... it won't be long now.

Current Diesel Prices in Anchorage Ak are approx. $1. 65/gal... . out of Anchorage expect at least 10-15 cents more... .

Thanks, I had an old addition ('94) of Mile Post and just ordered the latest addition. It looks like a great reference manual for the North Country.

I just drove the Alcan last week. Wide open, two dirt construction patches totalling less than 10 miles. Fuel every 100 miles or less - cheaper than down here. The road through AK to White Horse is full of frost heaves requiring 100% attention. I got my tailer (28') airborn just east of Tok, AK. The rest of the trip is quite plesant - the greatest problem after White Horse is buffalo on the road.

Have you found a dealer yet? Is the engine work warranty, or will a Cummins shop be ok?
Their are several members in Lost Wages area.

JNutter, the work should be warrantied, that's why I was looking for a dealer. I though someone mentioned one in Henderson, but I don't remember if it was a yea or nay. I have recommendations in southern CA and for Carson City Dodge.

Just returned from Alaska. There was no problem geting fuel but be prepared to pay a wide range of prices. Fuel ranged from $1. 39 to $2. 00. Drove 10,000 miles with a average of 19. 51 mpg.
