I was having problems with oil all over the front of the engine. About a month ago I had the dealer relocate the breather as per TSB 09-002-02.

Would it have been better to perform your solution over the TSB?

Oh YES !!! very much. 1 hour is all it takes.

Just remove the cover, grind the rear tabs. Be sure to check that the hole will be between stiffeners and parts inside the head. If you use the pic as a guide, you will be fine... .

when you have the hole and all aluminum cleaned and parts pre-fitted, put the cover back on without the parts because of clearance... . then the grommet and filter slip right on.

Cut a small piece of the origional hose and plug it and clamp it back on the origional position so all the vapors go out the new opening.

Route a hose out and down the side making sure it is away from the exhaust, zip tie the end down by the motor mount so the end is like behind the axle and I cut the hose on a angle so the slip stream will pull the vapors out. I don't have any drips on my driveway and the engine breaths and no seal problems.

This is the best thing for the oil vent solution... . by far!

Closest thing to the old 12 valve side vent so now I can go down steep hills off-road and the engine will hold all the oil

How 'bout this

Couldn't the same thing be done by drilling a hole in the oil cap instead of going through the valve cover. Seems like you could use an after-market oil cap and that way replace the original if you had to take the rig in for warranty work.

Just a thought!

I piped my blowby hose into a 1" pvc header that goes all the way back to the real axle area. It then transitions into a 3/4" heater hose to a 3/4" pipe elbow welded to my 4" tail pipe aft axle. I have had it this way for 2 years now with absolutely no problems. No smell, no drips, no messy tailpipe, no oily film anywhere at all.

It's just a simple vapor recovery system like has been required to register old cars in CA for over twenty years. As it is it might cause crancase pressures to rise and start blowing oil by seals. Might not too.

I took my truck in to the local dealer when I noticed the oil bottle had come loose and wore mostly away on the flywheel. The well respected diesel tech there said he had his own fix and for $8 he removed the bottle and line and ran a length of heater hose from the original connection point up and over the engine and down the back side near the transmission where all the goop now falls onto the ground. No more mess, but I don't know if it solves the problem of the steep grades.

well did ya

Hate to sound like a little kid asking well did ya, well did ya but with no answer yet... . HAS ANYONE TESTED THIS SET UP GOING UP A STEEP HILL. . NOT THE DRIVE WAY TO THE BEER MART. BUT ROUGH STEEP UP HILL UNDER POWER WOUND UP A LITTLE????????? I have asked and others to with no direct answer.

ok,ok, ok, OK!!!

I am going to the desert this weekend with the trailer and quad. I will try to find a steep incline to test it out.

Thjanks for the good information. I was in Kragen yesterday looking around and came up with a potential solution. I noticed a replacement oil cap and an odd appearing vent cap. They are Stanton numbers 11111 and 11084.

I took the replacement cap apart so as not to ruin it and drilled some holes in the bottom part and one in the top part. It will be obvious what to do.

Then I cut the rubber off of the vent cap and then glued (with 3M 5200)(could probably use any of many others) and screwed it to the other cap.

Sprayed the whole thing black andit looks okay. Ran the hose down and back near the rear of the engine.

Probably going to be a pain taking new cap off and on but less trouble than hearing complaints about oil on the driveway

OK!

Did a check on the angle and went down a steep hill and no leak! Same on a steep uphill.

To be sure, I am going to moab in September and there is a hill called baby lion back and it was the one where I discovered the flaw of the oil vent so I will test it out on that as well. . But for now, this is the way to go to not have oil spill out on the ground while 4 wheelin'

Thought I'd bring this back to the top for others to see it.

This is working very well, I did do a steep hill and no oil came out, I am going to a place in September where I had the oil spikk happen and will test it out on that...

I been looking at this post & wondering if any of you have given the Air-Sep system by Walker Industries a try ? I got tired of cleaning all the oil spray off everything from front to back on the bottom of the engine bay. A very good friend of mine who has many years of experience in marine diesel applications mentioned the Air-Sep, he said he has seen it used in several hundred boats and the owners of these big boats like them bacause it keeps the engine compartments spotless. I bought one of these systems based on his experience over a year ago & have not had to clean that crap off my engine since! It should work for your serious off-road situations. It has a vented cap & a drain that goes back into the crankcase @ the same spot that your turbo oil return does. Just a thought, not trying to ruffle any feathers, but it did what I wanted it to & I am satisfied with the product. Oo.

Didn't leak! on the normal driving, it does make a drip here and there but far less than the other meathod.

I went down a steep hill and no leak...
