I have a 1996 with a five speed trans. Has anyone changed to a 6 speed trans on a 1996. If so, How long does it take ?, How much does it cost ?, and finally would you do it again ?. Thanks for any input. Dale in Palmdale Ca.

Certainly not an expert on this one, but I believe the new 6 speed gearboxes are all part of the computer crap integrated into everything on the truck, and that without the wires plugged in, it aint gonna fly... If you just got $$ to throw at it, why not exchange your gearbox for a Texas reman with the spine fix for 5th gear, get to Camping World and put in a US Gear overdrive unit... 9 speeds, no headaches, stupid fuel mileage!

Dale:

I bolted a 2000 5sp up to my 96. Tcase bolts up the same. Had to change the shiftllever and boot somewhat. As I understand it, a NVG5600 should bolt up. Probably need a different clutch, tcase should bolt on. Have to change shafts,6sp is longer. No wires to deal with other than what runs over the trans. I believe the frame support is slotted to allow enough movement back.

I checked into this somewhat when I replace my 5sp. The $5200 price for just the trans scared me off!

This has been done on a 12V by now and someone might shed some light.
