Have not, If I take your title Google says,,,, maybe.

There are other articles that say outlooks for Allison in general due to the current situation could push to 2023, those are more stock and financial sites.

Is there a 6th Gen Ram section yet? I thought we were at 4.5?

These kind if threads should get a special tag so a few years from now we can go back and see what came of this.

Thanks for the reply. Im waiting for the new allison to replace my 03 dodge Cummins. She has over 200,000 miles.Not looking forward to paying 60- 75 thousand dollars for a truck. However if the new truck is as good as my 03 it WILL be worth it.
 
The ZF 8 speed was tested in a RAM a few years ago, I'm surprised that it has not been put in use already. Allison name recognition will sell a lot of trucks, personally I dont care whether the new trans is ZF or Allison as long as it has good shift points and can handle all the torque.
 
That transmission should have only been in the first three to four years of the 5.9 common rail. Of course this is only my opinion. It cannot handle much power, torque converter does not lock up untill about 45 to mph. The transmission gets hot quick at slower speeds. You are correct the Allison may have problems like anything else.
 
I know I’m gonna “get it” but I wish there was still a Manual option.
Does anyone know what model ZF was considered?
IMHO Allison makes a Heckuva medium and class 8 slush box.


I'm with you Wayne. I'm keeping my hand shaker for as long as I can and I don't care who doesn't like it. Of course, I don't have a duty cycle that pushes the capability of the trans and may think differently if I did.
 
My 2001.5 is a manual and I have loved it all these years, however the condition of my knee has not held up like the truck has therefore I appreciate a good auto in my 2015. Its fantastic that an auto has such a good exhaust brake and GCWR, it wasnt that long ago that you couldnt use an exhaust brake on an auto period.
 
Maybe I don't drive enough or have the most miles on my 68RFE but I like the transmission. I am just under 135K on the OD, and I do service the trans regularly. I am 60Hp/120lb-ft TQ over stock and I tow a 34RL Cedar Creek with the truck.

I do know that any transmission can be broken by doing dumb things to the vehicle that the powertrain was not designed to do. My older son use to own with two other gentlemen, a part time performance shop. They haven't done anything in the last two or three years with working on other user trucks, life has gotten in the way. My point is that when I use to go out on Saturday to his shop to work on my truck. There would be Chevys/GMC, Fords and Dodges in the shop all getting modified with either new transmissions and or blown engines. One gentleman who had a Chevy dually had in the space of a year; three rebuilt Allison transmission put in his truck. Why? He loved to do back to back pull test taking on all comers. You pay to play.
 
The ZF in the Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel is very nice. The Allison has the reputation. Either would be a really good option. Either would be expensive to work on. The GC 8HP70D has really good shift logic and feel. Those that have had it tuned like it even better. Things I don't like; plastic pan with built in filter. Have to change the pan to change fliter ( https://www.idparts.com/automatic-transmission-service-kit-8hp70d-68225344aa-p-5491.html ). There is no dipstick. You need an engineering degree just to check the oil ( ). Allison in Duramax has spin-on filter and lots of aftermarket support. I am much more interested in future CTD emission strategies than transmissions. I am hoping the no-egr, after treatment only will find its way from off-highway use to RAM.
 
I’m very happy with the HP70 in my RT Durango, but I don’t know how it’ll do between a 6.7 and 30,000 lbs.
Tinman, that’s an interesting website, but it’s very limited- don’t help me at all.

I agree with the future emission strategy. If they can loose EGR, I might actually look into a new diesel someday. SCR really doesn’t bother me as much as EGR.
 
Will I am not a big fan of ZF transmissions, we designed them into some Medum wheel loaders because the Europan customers want them over the Cat planetary transmission in their tractors. After a couple of hundred hours of operation they where failing in the tractors. The customers who purchased these tractors want them removed and have the Cat planetary transmissions installed.

Just because the end product like a ZF transmission might work in some products does not mean this will work in another product. The design must be mated correctly and the Europeans sometimes won't listen to there US customers.

Just my very humble opinion.

Very true. The Jeep Cherokee uses a ZF 9 speed that gets terrible reviews. Also, Honda uses a 9 speed, don't know if it's the same, that was resoundingly despised for laggy, confused behavior, etc. They all make some duds.
