I'd been carefully watching this thread since its inception and feel it's time for me to chime in (pun intended) with my converter experiences.
Like many others on this board my 3500 6. 7L auto, is a working truck. I drag 10k to 14k of equipment and trailer throughout the state of Florida for 80 percent of my total mileage, now showing 8k on the clock accumulated over three months of ownership.
Tuesday evening on my way home from work I stopped for fuel, when I started re-started the engine the overhead displayed converter 80 percent full, I pulled out of the parking lot and within one mile the display changed to converter full service required.
Early Wednesday morning I dropped to truck off at the dealer for service, around lunchtime the service manager called me and inferred the problem was my fault, he gave blame to a possibility of 4 things, not using low ash oil, not using 2007 compliant fuel, driving the truck to easy and high idle time. The truck's computer claims 40 percent of the engine hours are at idle. (I discovered later that the computer registers 5 percent or less throttle pressure as idle time)
On Wednesday afternoon Chrysler instructed the dealer to reset the regenerative filter timers and perform a mobile desoot.
First thing Thursday morning they sent the driver out to perform the mobile desoot, I'm under the impression that the mechanic working on my vehicle didn't feel confident that this actually solved the problem and requested that the vehicles stay overnight so they could test it again in the morning.
Friday morning Chrysler instructed the dealer to perform TSB 18-033-07, PCM re-flash. Friday afternoon I was told I could come pick up the vehicle it’s finished.
Three invoices required my signature, 1 for the rental covered by Business Link, 1 for the warranty repairs, and an invoices for approximately $60 worth of desooting time, that as the courtesy was being covered by authorization from the area Chrysler Rep, and again it was stressed that this was my entire fault and if it happened again I was going to be on my own.
The service manager said wait here and I will have you truck brought up by the diesel mechanic that worked on it he wants to talk to you!
With my owners manual in one hand and photocopies of pages from the manual referring to maintaining your vehicle / catalyst full, he preceded once again to inform me that as outlined in the manual it is my negligence that has caused this problem. So I asked him if it was going to have less than one mile of notice to stop what I’m doing and take the vehicle on a long high speed ride.
He said the new software flash should give me sufficient time and if I will modify my driving habits the truck should take care of itself. I have been instructed that this truck is designed to be under load and not babied. Furthermore he brought to my attention that the regeneration process although it takes 45 minutes needs a minimum of 45 minutes to begin its cycle, the vehicle needs to be under a load running at about 2000 RPMs to complete the regeneration if you step on the brake the process aborts and you must begin again.
For that it is worth the truck has required me to change the oil three times and I used Delo 400LE, I purchased my fuel from Murphy and Hess both are high-volume dealers and have 2007 compliant labels on their pumps. (driving too easy?) When the light turns green I roll into full throttle, if it is going to break, it's going to be under warranty. In my opinion there are two kinds of drivers, those that follow and those that lead, both can be seen in my review mirror.
So, glad to have my truck back and put this behind me I departed the dealership, as I made a U-Turn and headed home my fuel indicator light came on. I quickly did the math and the difference between my mileage in and my mileage out of the dealer is 335 miles, I sincerely hope somebody enjoyed spending the day cruising the interstate in my ride, at my expense! considering that they burned $80 worth of my fuel, added 335 miles, and I lost three days of use of my truck I'm not exactly pleased.
Well here we are Saturday morning and I'm now loaded up and three days behind schedule, anyone care to guess what happens next? I pulled out of the equipment barn, 1000 feet across the field turn onto the pavement and ding/ding, MIL, overhead displays converter full service required!
Now I’m scheduled to take it back Monday morning, I'm becoming increasingly stressed and growing angry by the minute, there's no telling how far the truck will go before quits. It obviously has less power either because it has d-rated or because the converter is plugged in the exhaust can't get out, maybe both. I don't trust driving it that this point.
I had to get a ride to Home Depot to pick up an additional roll of duct tape, I have my head wrapped tightly with one role and this is the only thing that's keeping it from exploding. I hope the second role be enough to get me through the weekend!
I hope you have better luck than Me!
