Amsoil Question

I intend to change over to Amsoil. I'm curious what others think about the proper choice of oil. The 3000 series in a 5w-30, or the heavy duty diesel/marine oil in the 15w-40. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so temps rarely go much below mid 20's in winter, and an occasional day or two near 100 deg. in the summer. If you have an opinion, I would like to know why you prefer one over the other, and your reasoning. Maybe someone out there is a dealer and has some good information on what to use and why. Thanks

I am running the AmsOil 15W/40 right now and it has 50K on it and as of 2K ago the oil sample says to keep running it. I have about 7K to go before changing both filters and I'll probibly be switching to the 5W/30 then. All the tests I have seen show that this new seri. 3000 protects better.

How long you going to leave it in?

If you can not get your self to run the same oil for more then 20K miles I would stick with the 15W40. I ran both and went with the 5W30 because I need a better winter oil. Even 15W40 cranks hard below -20.



The 5W30 is alot pricer then the 15W40 but it has tested better on even worse operating conditions in my case. I run it year round and have work my truck hard in 90+ degree heat with no issues at all.



BTW, I do NOT run any bypasss, just a Stratapore filter changed every 6K and the oil dumped every 25K.

I run the 5W-30 year round, no problems.

I can' think of anyone that has posted worse sample numbers after switching to the 5W-30.



I was running it 1 year, or 35,000 miles, changing Amsoil SDF 80 at 7500. This worked fine with stock fuel, for 2 years.



My latest sample has showed me adding more fuel is hard on the oil, I have dropped back to 15,000 miles.



I don't know if the price difference is worth the extra wear protection to you over the Amsoil 15-40.

You are a fortunate person. You live in the land of the <a href=http://nwbombers.com target=_blank>Northwest Bombers</a>. I believe the majority of the NWBombers running AMSOIL in the Cummins use the 15W-40. A couple of them are dealers, too.

Also, remember to use the block heater on a regular basis when the temps stay below 40&deg; F. and you will be fine.



I just changed over to the Series 3000 5W-30. I'm very happy with it to date. It really helps make these 0&deg; F. mornings easier on the Cummins.

I've been using Amsoil 15w-40 for about 85,000 miles. I now have 31,000 on the oil with just filter changes. The worst thing I notices is the iron in the oil. When I go a little over I see an increase in the iron but never enough to even worry about. The chart across the board is good. Where I live a 5W-30 in not needed.
