Agreed that bypass filters are cool, I'm considering one. But given the fact ALL the 1,000,000 mile Dodge/Cummins have used dino oil and OEM filters I cant quite justify it. If a operator can get 1,000,000 on dino and regular service why take the chance and spend the extra $?

And in my book, guys peddling or promoting specific brands or filter types who won't or can't provide a typical analysis sheet displaying results using their filter, don't merit much consideration for my filter $$$!

Gary,

I agree! Where do you want me to send the results? I have a bunch!

If I were not convinced of the benefits of by-pass filtration, I certainly would not be using or selling them, as I Will NOT sell anything I do NOT believe in!

Wayne, don't send 'em. POST them! here, for all to see and benefit from - I'd especially like to see one you would rate as typical with somewhere around 5000-7000 miles on the oil, total, no extrapolating 50,000 mile oil to average out results. Oil brand is immaterial - Amsoil, Mobil 1, or plain 'ol Delo or rotella...

Give us whatcha got! ;)

I too firmly believe in bypass filtering - I'd far rather spend $150 ONCE on a device that assures steady and continued oil purity and lubrication quality, than far MORE over the life of an engine with special or expensive lubes.

As to your bit above about a guy with 5 trucks, displaying variations in oil analysis results, I don't doubt that relatively SMALL percentage variations WILL normally occur - but if they are substantial and/or erratic, something just ain't right! AND, if a bypass of ANY brand is in use and NOT delivering greatly improved analysis results, again, something is wrong!

And by the way - I'm still plugging along with my extended drain test using Delo 400 15/40 - but the miles are coming pretty slooooow! ;) :D

And thanks for the analysis test lab info you PM to me - I appreciate it...

Gary,

This will not prove anything, as each oil analysis is based only on the vehicle or apperatus it is taken from. You can have the same brand engines, and run them under the same conditons, and still each analysis will be different!

I have a customer with 5 trucks, all Dodge/cummins and each one will come back with different results. All of these trucks have about the same total mileage within 10,000 miles.

There is little or no point in comparing the oil analyses on 2 different engines and trying to assign some significance to it. Oil analysis is like barometric pressure: it doesn't matter what the specific value is, it only matters how it's changed over the last few hours. :)

YUP - to a degree - but analysis in this respect is more related to the ability of a given bypass filter to significantly REDUCE wear metals and related contaminents - I think a few of us have seen enough typical analysis results to pretty fairly recognize a good analysis from a poor one... ;) :D

You tell us! ;)

The question of whether you can justify the cost is one that only you can answer.

Personally I would love to have a GCF O-1 (big paper towel unit) for the engine oil bypass filter, and a Frantz fuel filter with an aux pump to maintain pressure. I just can't personally justify that expense at this point.

Of course, awhile ago I couldn't justify the cost of my Mach 1 EDMs, but that changed... :D

Hopefully, in our eager rush to enthusiastically embrace those extremely FEW Cummins in our trucks that have racked up impressive mileage totals with minimal extra attention, we won't be blinded to the 99. 9% that DIDN'T! ;) :D :p

One thing to remember too, guys that are running OTR, aren't normally strarting and stopping the engine a lot during the day. Going 400+ miles a day straight is different than maybe 10-100 with lots of stops in between.

Myself, I fall into the latter.

The hoses are oil resistant. I would think that chaffing would be more dependant on how the hoses were routed.....

That's what I meant... chaffing from being routed up against something under the hood.

If you route them well you shouldn't have any problems. If you're worried you could put some split loom on them as an extra measure of insurance.

I finally found enough time over this long weekend to get my group purchased filter installed. I sure wish I would have gave it a test start before I mounted the filter in its bracket. The fitting that is the hardest to get to leaked and I had to start over. I could not make it seal with the thread sealant supplied in the kit. I had to use some teflon tape. I am sure happy I installed a valve on the supply side. It was only 6. 25 from a hose supplier. It is nice to know that you can shut the thing off if you you have a leak somewhere. Thanks Gary and others for all your help.

Sure would like to see a few reports back from new users as to what you are experiencing in visual oil cleaning after 500 miles or so - or how much longer your oil is staying cleaner...
