I had considered putting this in the political forum, but decided it deserved a little higher billing than that. I dont want this to become a political fire. I feel this hits a deeper point in our society, where people who havent even seen the movie bash it and call Mel Gibson all kinds of bad things, trying to bring him down for following his heart.

As a Christian, and no less as an American, I am appalled at the gall and apparent fading of this man's mind with time. He makes Mel Gibson out to be some kind of money hungry nut- case, when that clearly is not the case- along with mocking God and the general intent of the movie. I realize there is freedom of speech, and Rooney has a right to express his ideas; but to deliberately launch an ad hominem attack against the movie and its creator is just wrong in my mind. This in my mind, was not just an expression of an idea.

Daniel

Andy Rooney-

It doesn't seem right, but religion has been in the news a lot recently.

Pat Robertson says that God has spoken to him and told him that George W. Bush will be re-elected because he deserves to be.

Here's Pat Robertson's exact quote: "I think George Bush is going to win in a walk. I'm hearing from the Lord that it's going to be a blowout. "

The movie by Mel Gibson called “The Passion of the Christ” is the other religious issue in the news. Everyone's talking about that. The question is whether the Jews killed Jesus Christ - who was Jewish, of course.

I hadn't wanted to say anything about this, because it seemed like a personal matter, but Pat Robertson isn't the only one who has heard from God.

I heard from God just the other night. God always seems to call at night.

"Andrew," God said to me. He always calls me "Andrew. " I like that.

"Andrew, you have the eyes and ears of a lot of people. I wish you'd tell your viewers that both Pat Robertson and Mel Gibson strike me as wackos. I believe that's one of your current words. They're crazy as bedbugs, another earthly expression. I created bedbugs. I'll tell you, they're no crazier than people,” said God.

"Let me just say that I think I'd remember if I'd ever talked to Pat Robertson, and I'd remember if I said Bush would get re-elected in a blowout. "

“As far as Mel Gibson goes, I haven't seen his movie, 'The Passion of the Christ,' because it hasn't opened up here yet. But I did catch Gibson being interviewed by Diane Sawyer. I did something right when I came up with her, didn't I,” added God. “Anyway, as I was saying, Mel is a real nut case. What in the world was I thinking when I created him? Listen, we all make mistakes. "

That is what God said to me. That's about all he did say to me because I'm sure God has a lot more important things to do than talk to someone on television.

My own question to Pat Robertson is this: The election looks as though it could be close, certainly not a blowout. If George W. Bush loses the election to a Democrat, will you become an atheist?

My question to Mel Gibson is: "How many million dollars does it look as if you're going to make off the crucifixion of Christ?"

Can't forget Rooney is part of the Liberal media.

Generally I find him amusing when I happen to catch him. Don't agree with him on this one if that's what he said (didn't see it). I will be going to see this movie this weekend.

The Passion

I think that Mel Gibson followed his heart on this one. And what if he does recoup his investment, plus some profit? It is called capitolism, folks. The fact that he is putting his money where his mouth, heart, & soul are impresses me greatly. I`ve seen & heard several interviews with him lately. His responses were impassioned,& I feel, genuine. I only know of one other film which was financed by the director/lead actor. He had dreamed of the film for years, &finally John Wayne made his dream movie... ... ... ... ... "The Alamo. " As far as "The Passion" goes, I feel it will demolish all attendance & Gate records for film. And that said, I will be part of the audience. Don.

Saw the movie today.

Very little of it cannot be found in the Bible.

It may scare non-Christian people. They may also see it as glorifying the gruesomeness.

But to those that believe the Bible, the movie quite graphically depicts the written word. Knowing that he did not have to go through with it, but did it because the Father demanded it as payment for our transgressions, and His love for us is so great that he went through with it. It was a big price... and He paid it... in full.

People of Andy's ilk may very well find themselves thrown in the lake.

Pray for them.

This movie is yet another chapter of this "cultural war" going on in America. The Libs and lefties are not particularly thrilled about this film and the rave response it is getting!

I hope this film goes to the hearts of many people and creates a spiritual stir that this generation of Americans really needs.

Andy Rooney. If he isn't saved by grace when his time comes... ... ..... his eyes will he opened. I pray it isn't the former.

'Nuff said.

The Wife and I want to see it. But so far every theater in our area has been sold out for every show. That's a good thing. Why is it that people complain about gruesomeness in this movie but go in droves to watch it in horror flicks and war movies?

I haent talked to anyone personally who has seen it, but everyone on talk radio that has, said it numbs you for a while; the entire theater is still for 5 minutes after the end, no one gets up, says anything.

Folks, I support Mel Gibson's right to make the movie, and I really hope that it's effective in spreading the Gospel of Christ. Having said that, I saw something on the news last night that I found troubling.

It seems that Christian bookstores are now selling crucifixion spike necklaces for $17. This particular report mentioned other Passion jewelry and trinkets that were being peddled as well. I'm all for capitalism, but the thought that immediately struck my heart was Jesus driving the moneychangers out of the temple. Dunno, maybe it's just my way of thinking..... :(

Why is it that people complain about gruesomeness in this movie ?

Wonder why people in todays world think that the standards of the world today apply to the times depicted in the movie, 2000 thousand years ago. Wonder if life was as antiseptic then as it is now? Remember the western and war movies of the 50's versus Saving Private Ryan for example.

Todays history is spent changing/condeming the past to suit whatever we want it to say rather than what may have really happened.

Just finished reading Andy Rooney's MY WAR and found his perspective interesting and informative, especially the way he notes that many people claim to have been on the beach @ D Day when in fact their unit arrived days/weeks later, so what they saw was entirely different than what happened the first day. He also notes the difference between actually being there and writing a historical novel based upon after action reports!

Whatever label you wish to put on him , I find his perspective interesting and informative.

We saw the movie last night. It was intense, emotional, moving, horrifying, inspirational, etc. I had as strange sense of peace though because I know that Jesus is alive and well. It's a must see. The gore is completely appropriate and in proper context.

Andy Rooney is out of his mind and should be off the air. He did say exactly what is quoted believe it or not. He was trying to make Christians seem like a bunch of loonies, just like all the leftist media is. Rush was talking about it on Tuesday and was right on.

True, but.............

My question is, even though I don't agree with the idea, but would an Atheist or a Satanist be allowed the same freedom as Mel Gibson to make & market a movie about their beliefs? Would a media icon like Andy Rooney be "crucified" by his peers and fellow citizens of said free speech society if he blasted a negative opinion towards them? There are many ways of belief in this world--I and most other citizens of the United States happen to believe in Christianity--but does that give us a right to shove our beliefs down other's throats? If white people walk around shouting "white power" they are deemed racist. If black people walk around shouting "black power" they are deemed extremist racial activists and troublemakers. If Arabic people wear turbans, robes, and kneel on a rug 16 times a day they are deemed terrorists. If a Christian walks around preaching the Gospel of The Lord 24/7 down the street, on TV, in a major motion picture, and tries to press his/her ideas on everybody else, using their power, money, and fame, its automatically ok? Why? Because Christians are the majority---think about that for just a minute. :)

Like I said, I'm Christian--so don't flame me here, I'm just wondering in a free society how come only certain opinions are OK to express? [/B]
Exactly the point! We are supposed to see art in "The Last Temptation Of Christ" but not in "The Passion". What`s the diff? Don

EXACTLY----this IS a free society and you have a CHOICE as to whether of not you will pay that six bucks to go see it. no one is making you see it or cramming it down your throat! if you don't want to see it, don't go. simple as that.

BTW--where the heck did you find a movie house that you get in for six bucks???????

Mel will be extremely wealthy after this movie runs it's course, it will set all kinds of box office records. It is ironic that Hollywood (controlled by Jews) producers wouldn't touch this film, so he invested alot of his own money to get the film to market. He deserves every penny he earns!

Now before you read any further, lemme make something clear here:

1) I was born & raised in a Christian family. Lutheran--MO Synod, ALC, and then the screwball ELCA.

2) My mom's brother (that would be uncle I guess) is a Lutheran minister.

3) My dad went to Catholic boarding school.

4) Have have been baptised and confirmed as a Lutheran.

5) I believe.

Ok, with that out of the way.....

This is a free speech society and every person has a right to express their feelings about issues. It is a given that people will not agree about quite a lot of things. Its also a given that in this society some things are deemed legally and morally wrong. I'm not discussing legal issues here, and not even moral issues really... . sticking to the issues given as acceptable.

Sure, Atheists and Devil worshipers can make movies about their beliefs... the big difference is, no one would pay money to see them, they would flop!

Whoa!

I think this thread is skewing off to the sides a little. For my . 02, I simply think Andy is a moron. His attempt at humor was ill conceived, and poorly received. He has chosen ,over the years, to live by the sword. Now he is dying by it. I have never particularly thought he was funny, just an irritable old *******. This issue has not changed my opinion, merely reinforced it. He CAN say what he likes, true. But I do not have to like it, or support those who do. When conservative reuse to take **** from liberals, it is bigotry. When the left ****s on us, it is their "Freedom of expression. " I know what the difference is, I just don`t like i or agree with it. Civilized disagreement is the heart of what we are. Andy just stepped over the line. Don.

I beg to differ with you, DL5treez- the white Christain male is fast becoming a down trodden minority. Take for example, the 15 year old high school student who wanted to start a Caucasian club in her school- there was an asian, hispanic, and black club- why not one for whites? She was labeled a racist bigot for wanting to do such a thing. The all-male Citadel was forced to take a few whining women a few years ago in the name of sexual equality; neither of them culd cut the muster; yet all- women schools, clubs, et al, are everywhere in this country. Not to mention the fact that kids cant even pray before eating lunch or taking a test anymore, unless they happen to be non-Christian- gotta keep church and state seperated. The leftist kooks forced the removal of a monument with the 10 commandments on it to be removed in Alabama- no one was forcing anyone to read or live by them- and the state chief justice stood by his beliefs and lost his job and power over it. The real irony is, that most courts begin their day (except in Stoddard county, where Satan himself presses the charges) with a prayer; Congress begins with a daly prayer. Christianity, or the morals thereof, were a basis of the founding of this country, and if you look into it, most major religions hold the same basic beliefs. The Left are just throwing a hissy fit because the "mainstream" they try to portray is not what is mainstream in reality- people are still morally straight, and try to do right, and THINK AND DO FOR THEMSELVES, a grave sin against the Liberal Machine of Govt Dependancy and Control.

Anyone who happens to be in a minority is going to be picked on, no matter what the group- it's human nature. I just think Rooney crossed a line. There is a difference between slander and free speech; a line that is getting greyer and greyer by the day.

Daniel

If Pat Robertson really said that about Bush I am disappointed although I bet it was taken out of context. I find nothing wrong with what Mel is doing. He spent a lot of his money to make this happen and I think you will see him give some of it back to help those in need.

What has Pat done lately to help those in need? I haven't watched the 700 Club in years but there was a lot of begging going on.

Andy is skewed in my opinion. Maybe he needs a hug:D

I'll be praying for all of them tonight.
