Another reference ? for the KDP

I have read the many discussions about the KDP. I also just finished reading the link sent in by Joe George which offered directions and photo's on this repair. I'm still a little confused, so here is my question on this subject. I understand a jig is out there somewhere that is used for this problem, and I would like to know if the jig is used for acually repairing the KDP, or is it used in such a way as to prevent the KDP from finding it's way lose and causing the damage? Thanks

The jig lets you run a bolt in to prevent it from backing out. If you hit the dowel pin when drilling its well on its way out and you'll have to pull the cover and tab it. Its easier to use the jig than to pull the cover and change the main seal,blah blah blah.

There are two ways to prevent this from happening in the first place. As pumperdude says the jig method is a lot easier than the other. It has some disadvantages. For one thing, you can't really tell if the pin has fallen out or not. It may be rattling around in the gears already for all you know. If it is protruding so the screw installed by the jig method won't work now you have an extra hole in the case you don't need. And you have to take it all apart to do it the other way. I prefer the "washer-tab" method. More work, but you know for sure what you have when you finish. In adition to the pin you can check the screws to make sure they are tight.
