Well my Smarty came in today. Here's my thoughts.

#8 - TST on 3/0 & 2/0... Undriveable in the state of CA. I actually had it loaded for about 5 minutes and pulled over on the side of the road to undo it. Way to touchy of throttle and it smoked so bad it's embarrasing. Yea, it's a rocket ship off the line. But actually not fun to drive on a daily basis. Something will break if you're not careful (ie. transmission)

#3 - TST on 3/0 & 2/0. Not bad. My TST/EZ stack had more power via seat of the pants. But good throttle response. I'll never load it again.

#6 - TST on 3/0 & 2/0... Still to touchy but better then both #3 and #8. Smokes a ton. Not good in CA. Undriveable down the freeway at cruising speed. Truck surges really, really bad. You can't maintain a set speed, regardless of cruise control.

#7 - TST on 0/0... About the same as #6.

I still have to try the #4 & #5 settings (90hp).

I did unplug my EZ so I'm only running the TST/Smarty stack w/90hp injectors. No matter what I did for timing, either TST or Smarty I couldn't get it to stop pinging because of to much timing at WOT. Even when I had the TST off and only used the Smarty timing. I tried a few other TST settings while driving. Like the #3 w/the TST on 2/2. Pinged really, really bad when I got on it. And with those setting I'm way underpowered compared to what I normally run.

I will say this. The Smarty wakes up this truck like no tomorrow. Man a rocket ship off the line. But my upper end hp is all but gone.

And yes it does fuel well past redline. :D

Temps did drop at WOT on all runs.

Still got to play with it a bit, but as of right now, I don't think I really like it.

Any thoughts on what I should try. I've heard there might be some downloads and I checked MadElectronics website but it didn't say what the down loads do.

EDIT. I'm in no way dissing this thing or slamming it. I like it and I want it to work. I can see the benifits of it (ie. low end hp) but I'm more frustrated then anything. Could it be the injectors or the cam or that it's an SO truck? Still go to keep playing with it. Not giving up on it. I'll try what ever you guys think might help.

I like the 30 and 60 HP tunes with timing, TST 5/5 and sometimes I turn the ez to 3. Once you find your settings youll like it a bunch more! The 90's may be why your just getting to much.

I still haven't found the happy Smarty/TST combo. I get a weird surge at WOT at relatively mild to max settings with about a 4-5psi pressure fluctuation. Kind of slow, with a 1/2 second surge up, then down.

Either box by themselves run like a bat out of you-know-where with solid, strong boost.

I'm going to add some pressure (with my MP-8 or EZ) to see if that makes the combo play nice. I'm thinking I may need a modded CP3 or something.

I definitely need about a half a day on the dyno to tune it in.

I have a Stage II CP3 sitting on my work bench, but it's not going in until the twins go in in about a week. We'll see. Maybe I should drop it know if it cures the problem.

Exactly what's happening to me. It makes the truck undrivable. Then throw in the horrible knocking & pinging. You can see why I'm frustrated.

Most of your problem lies in your truck being an `04!! Not a good yr for the ECM Tuning. my $. 02

i can say i thought of the same thing. but who knows, maybe marco will chime in... ... ... ... ... ...

Matt,

It is the SO. I read another thread where the SO had terrible pinging with the Stack. let me see if I can find it. Maybe the two of you should talk.

I'm already happy! :D

I love the throttle response with the Smarty, and I have high hopes for the updates.

Best mod I think I've done yet. Definitely upped the fun-to-drive factor a lot.

OK. So I went and loaded #5 and took her for a drive. Way better on the throttle response. But it still knocked & pinged. Power is definatly there on take off then nothing. Falls flat and pings/knocks. This is with the TST on 0/0. Any adjustment to the TST and the pinging/knocking is even worse.

BobW - What are the updates going to do.

less tq and low end smoke plus

I plan on four different update available on the web site :

1) Stock torque management

2) mild TQM decrease

3) moderate TQM decrease ( same as out today )

4) WILD...

Bob... how about those with transmission malfunctions  . some of us are experiencing no second gear, more like a 1-3 shift and tvva adjustments.

the smarty alone increases alot of timing then you stack the tst, and dont expect it to cause pinging and rattles, it can cause way bigger problems than that. too much timing can blow up you ride, be care full with what your asking the truck to do... ... ... ... ...

Relatively the same issues here. My Smarty is sitting on the shelf awaiting the new programs to try.

If you look back at the initial release of all the programmers currently on the market, they all had the same teething pains. We were all talking trash about the BDDL when it first came out. Seems it took them about 3 or 4 months to get all the bugs worked out. I suspect we will see the same with Smarty. Sooner or later Marco will get all of our issues taken care of.

I will say that I think Bob's marketing leading up to the release of the 3rd Gen Smarty was some of the most heavy handed, pushy, hype filled marketing I have ever seen. It was fun to watch the pride bubble explode and all that hype reduced to the famous one-liner we now see on all the diesel forums.

Brian, that is just plain wrong, wrong I say. :-laf

Please guys. I don't want to start a war or bashing. I just want to know how to get this thing to work. I'm in no way bashing the Smarty. I love the low-end hp. But I want my top end back without the pinging.

Where's Marco?
