Norton

I have had Norton since 95, only problem is stacked subscriptions sometimes. You can do a clean up and dump the old ones though. They now have a automatic subscription option that works real well, they give you a warning, and it downloads automatically, Same with updates. Their spam filter is about the best I have seen.

Nod32

Used it for 3 years now, no problems, does not use too many resources which is good for an older computer like mine. Also use BitDefender online scanner to verify that NOD32 is doing it's job.

ESET NOD32

No one does it better, they keep their virus definitions up to date and protect you from multiple threats, No other anti-virus I've seen covers more with just one product.

I never had any problems with Norton either but they don't cover as much without buying additional products.

I have been using AVG anitvirus from Grisoft.com for about a year. it is free for personal computer use. have it installed on 4 or so computers at home. no problems.

for business i am using Symantec (Norton) antivirus V 10. it's a little pricey but does well in the business environment.

Make sure to include a spyware removal program such as Ad-Aware from lavasoft.com.

it normally gets the stuff that the anti-virus programs don't.

good luck

Another vote for NOD32. I've been running it for a couple of years now, and I really can't even tell that it's there. My sister-in-law's buisiness had several older PCs that she was about to replace because of speed, but switching out Norton for NOD32 made them usable again. NOD32 is always at the top of the reviews for its performance, but loses points for ease-of-use. But really, if you just install it with the default config, you'll probably not have to touch it ever again. Good stuff.

If you want free stuff,,, Avast Home is one of the best going.

AVG is also a good product.

CRAP- Symantec & McAfee... These two deserve NOTHING>

The Best,,, Kaspersky,,,

Honorable mention,,, Trend.

Most Virus software has way too much system overhead...

You can safely disable many of the services that automatically start... .

Bit Defender.

No problems, no spyware, no viruses for the last four years. I do not use any spyware removers or anything else in addition to the AV. Updates about every 20-30 minutes when I am online. Realtime protection is the only way to go. Like others said, Norton, McAfee... ... . Junk.

We had Norton, til it let in a virus. Our computer whiz hooked us up with AVG. No problems in 3-4 years. Free, and free updates.

Interesting, the garden tractor forum I'm on, someone asked the same question a couple days ago. ;)

Trend

I've run Trend at the office and at home for years, and never had a problem. Are you up to date ? Do you run scans ? Have you changed the settings ? I really like the product, and wonder why you're having problems. Bruce

I only use Avast Anti-Virus in any of my machines. I have never had any issues with it letting anything past and it updates often and without problem. Norton is such a resource hog it will never go back into any machine I use... Andy

I used mostly norton in my machines and my customers till it started to go bad a few revs ago. It actually shut one of my customers down for a few days.

McAffee - Too many application problems with it.

Trend works, but has a habit of taking over the computer to do something that it wants to do in the middle of my doing something that I want to do. I call it virus checking with attitude.

I am now using Kaspersky and I am very happy with it.

I load AVG free on new machines so they do not go out the door with nothing. Many customers have their own preferences.

IMHO spyware and adware protection is even more key than virus, although you need both. I read somewhere that the hackers that used to write viruses for free are now getting paid to write spyware / adware.

While getting something (pretection) for nothing is attractive, especially in today's economy. Think it over how much are you willing to do for nothing? Everyond needs to get paid for their work. You really do get what you pay for.

I was using Norton.

When I got my new computer, it had Trend already installed on it so I thought Id try it.

While transfering info from my old machine to the new one, Trend caught a couple of things that Norton never showed.

One was a sleeping Trojan virus and three spywares.

So far, Trend has been doing a good job as far as Im concerned.

The Trend has worked good until the 2007 version, it updates every day, sometimes twice... ... ... I have the full "suite"

I ran Spy Sweeper and found 2 trojans and many spyware cookies (note, if you use Spy Sweeper decline the "Ask.com" feature)... ...

I have read that NOD 32 is the way to go, but can't find it in stores. (did everyone with it here, download it?)..... I'm afraid to use a C. card over the internet..... I may try the free trail.

Thank to everyone for their opinions,,,,,,,,

Being in the industry I suggest AVG anti-virus & firewall and spysweeper for anti-spyware. There are other decent packages out there but those are what I've found to work the best. I can also say that you absolutely DO NOT want to run Norton. I have made a lot of money removing Norton anti-virus packages from peoples PC's the last couple years. In one case I found 200 viruses and 2000 pieces of spyware on a persons PC that had a current and updated copy of Norton on it.

I've been using Zone Alarm for about a year and a half. Very good program that doesn't slow your computer down. When you first install it, it takes a while for it to learn what programs you use. It will ask your permission to allow programs to continue, similar to Vista ( i'm using XP pro). It will remember those programs which are safe so when one that isn't safe wants to run, it will not automatically let it run. A bit of an advanced program, but very good. #ad

Trend

Ya' know, if, with Trend, you don't like the automatic update feature, you can turn it off. Then you can do updates manually, at your convenience. Bruce

I've used AVG for a few years now with no problems. I like the fact that it's FREE Oo. and seems to work well. I don't have to think about it, it checks for updates and and runs itself every morning.
